Chapter 7 - The Confession

At midnight, Kelly showed up at the precinct. She didn't run. Broken, sobbing, and terrified of spending decades in prison, she sat in Interrogation Room B and gave Detective Vance everything.

I watched through the two-way mirror alongside Sarah Lin.

"Julian came to the house three weeks ago," Kelly choked out, blowing her nose into a ragged paper towel. Her mascara was smeared down her pale cheeks. "He said men were after him over a drug shipment. Mom hid him in the attic. She told me if I said a word to Natalie, she'd cut me out of the trust fund and tell my boss at the bank that I was stealing money."

"And what happened this afternoon, Kelly?" Vance leaned forward across the metal table. "Be very precise."

"I was in the kitchen making lunch," Kelly whispered, her hands trembling violently. "Ava said she wanted to play hide-and-seek. I told her not to go upstairs, but she was just being a kid. She went up. Two minutes later, I heard a terrible crash and a scream."

Kelly squeezed her eyes shut, fresh tears spilling over.

"I ran up the stairs. Ava was lying at the bottom of the attic landing. Her head was bleeding everywhere. Julian was standing over her, holding her arm like... like a piece of luggage. He was yelling that she saw his stash, that she was going to blab to Natalie. Mom came out of her bedroom. She didn't check Ava's pulse. She didn't call 911. The first thing Mom said was: *'Julian, get inside before someone sees you through the window.'*"

"And then?" Vance pressed.

"Mom picked Ava up by her collar," Kelly sobbed. "Ava was crying for Natalie. Mom shook her. She shook her so hard Ava's teeth clicked. Mom said, *'Shut your mouth, you little brat, or I’ll let your uncle put you in the trunk.'* Then Mom brought her into the bathroom, washed the blood out of her hair with cold water, and put Julian’s old sweater on her. She handed Ava to me and said: *'Drive her to Natalie’s. Tell her she fell. If you tell her anything else, I will tell the police you were the one harboring Julian.'*"

Kelly buried her face in her hands.

"I was so scared, Detective. I knew it was wrong. But Mom has this way of making you feel like if you don't obey her, you won't survive. She’s done it to us our whole lives."

"You had a choice, Kelly," Vance said sternly, standing up. "A six-year-old girl didn't have one."

Behind the glass, I closed my eyes. The truth was out. Recorded, documented, and signed in ink.
