Chapter 5 - The Fall of Elmwood Terrace

The rain was coming down in heavy, relentless sheets as four marked cruisers and an unmarked tactical unit screeched to a halt outside Eleanor Hayes’ sprawling Victorian home.

I wasn't supposed to be there, but I had insisted on riding in the secondary squad car with Sarah Lin. I needed to see it. After thirty years of being gaslit, after decades of being told that my mother was a saint and I was the crazy daughter, I needed to witness the truth dismantle Eleanor’s kingdom.

The porch lights of the grand house were blazing. The manicured boxwood hedges and pristine cobblestone driveway looked like something out of an architectural magazine—a pristine mask hiding a nest of rot.

"Eleanor Hayes, Julian Hayes! This is the police! We have a warrant! Open the front door!" Vance's voice echoed through a megaphone, slicing through the deluge of rain.

No movement.

"Breach," Vance ordered.

A heavy battering ram struck the ornate mahogany front door. On the second blow, the wood splintered inward with a deafening crash. Officers surged into the foyer with drawn weapons, shouting commands: "Police! Hands where I can see them!"

From inside, a woman shrieked.

Moments later, Eleanor Hayes was marched onto the front porch in handcuffs.

Even in zip-ties, she tried to maintain her aristocratic posture. She was dressed in an expensive cream cashmere sweater and pearl earrings, her makeup immaculate. But her face was twisted into an expression of utter, rabid fury.

"How dare you!" Eleanor screamed into the rain, thrashing against the firm grip of two female officers. "Do you have any idea who I am? I am on the board of the Symphony! I know the mayor! Get your filthy hands off me!"

Then, her eyes caught mine sitting in the passenger seat of the squad car across the street.

Eleanor stopped thrashing. Her gaze pierced through the rain-streaked glass. She looked at me not with sorrow, not with remorse, but with a deep, bottomless hatred.

"You miserable, jealous little bitch!" Eleanor shrieked, her voice carrying over the sirens. "You ruined this family! You were always broken! You’re ungrateful trash!"

"Watch your step, ma'am," an officer barked, shoving her down into the back of a squad car.

A second later, a loud struggle broke out in the backyard.

Shouts of "Taser! Taser! Taser!" pierced the night, followed by a guttural roar of agony and the heavy thud of a body hitting wet grass.

Julian.
