Chapter 2 - The Roots of Deception

Patricia Carter looked like she had just won a championship chess match. Her silver-bobbed hair was impeccably styled, her cashmere coat draped over her shoulders like a cape, and her lips curled into a smirk that dripped with malicious satisfaction. She didn't look like a mother who had just learned her daughter-in-law was pushed off a terrace and fighting for her life; she looked like a general surveying a conquered battlefield.
“Mom,” Daniel said, his voice cracking, a dangerous edge creeping into his tone as he whirled around to face her. “Get out.”
“Oh, please, Daniel,” Patricia scoffed, stepping further into the room and completely ignoring the medical equipment surrounding my bed. “You’re acting like a lovesick fool. Look at her! She’s pale, she’s sweating, she’s caught in her own trap. I came straight from the lobby because I knew the moment those doctors looked inside her, the whole scam would unravel.”
Rachel hovered near the doorway, wringing her hands, her eyes shifting nervously between her mother and her brother. “Mom, stop it. Emily just fell off a terrace! She could have died!”
“She jumped or staged it for sympathy, Rachel! Use your head!” Patricia snapped at her daughter. Then she turned her icy gaze back toward me, venom dripping from every syllable. “Well, Emily? Did the doctor tell you that your little fifty-million-dollar insurance policy is exposed? Did they tell you the truth?”
My mind was still reeling from the doctors' revelation. Superfetation. Two different fathers. How? It was biologically impossible unless... unless I had been with someone else. But I hadn't. In the three years of my marriage to Daniel, I had never so much as looked at another man. I loved Daniel with every fiber of my being. I had built my entire world around him.
Yet, here I was, lying in a hospital bed, branded a liar, an adulterer, and a gold-digger by my mother-in-law, with medical evidence staring us in the face that made me look like the most deceitful woman alive.
“Patricia,” I choked out, my voice raw. “I didn't... I don't know what you're talking about.”
“Liar!” Patricia stepped right up to the side of the bed, pointing a manicured finger inches from my face. “You thought you could trap my son with a baby, drain his company assets during a corporate restructuring, and walk away with a multi-million-dollar divorce settlement! But you slipped up. You didn't expect us to check your credentials, and now the truth is out!”
“Mom, shut up!” Daniel roared, his voice shaking the very walls of the hospital room. He stepped between Patricia and my bed, his chest heaving, his eyes bloodshot. “Shut your mouth right now! Do you have any idea what the doctors just told us?”
Patricia blinked, momentarily taken aback by Daniel's fury. “They... they told you she’s lying. They told you the pregnancy doesn't match up, right?”
“They told me she is carrying twins,” Daniel said, his voice dropping into a terrifying, dead whisper. “Conceived weeks apart. With two different biological fathers.”
The silence that fell over the room was absolute.
Rachel gasped, covering her mouth with her hands. Even Patricia’s smug expression faltered for a fraction of a second, though she quickly recovered, her eyes narrowing with malicious glee.
“Well, well, well,” Patricia whispered, her voice dripping with toxic vindication. “Look at that. Even better than I expected. Not only is she a gold-digger, she’s a whore who couldn't even keep track of whose bed she was crawling into while my son was working his fingers to the bone building this family's empire!”
“That is enough!” Dr. Vance stepped forward, her professional authority cutting through the venom in the room like a scalpel. “This is a medical facility, and this patient is recovering from severe physical trauma. If you cannot maintain order and respect, I will have security remove every single one of you.”
Patricia sneered, but she took a half-step back. She crossed her arms, looking at Daniel with a gaze full of manipulative pity. “You see, Daniel? I told you from day one. A girl from her background—no family money, working a mid-level marketing job, entirely ordinary—she saw our fifty million dollars and she targeted you. And now you know the true cost of her ambition.”
I looked at Daniel. The man I loved more than life itself. The man who had held my hand through my father’s funeral, who had whispered forever against my forehead on our wedding day.
He was staring at the floor, his jaw clenched so tightly I thought his teeth might shatter.
“Daniel,” I whispered, reaching out a trembling hand toward him. “Look at me. Please. You know me. You know I have never been with anyone else. You know I love you.”
Daniel slowly raised his head. His eyes—usually filled with such warmth and absolute adoration—were now clouded with a dark, agonizing storm of confusion, betrayal, and pain.
“Emily,” he said, his voice hollow and broken. “How is this possible?”
“I don't know!” I cried, fresh tears spilling over my cheeks. “I swear to God, Daniel, I don't know! I have never cheated on you! Never! You have to believe me!”
“How can I believe you when the science is right there on that screen?” he whispered, stepping away from the bed as if my very presence was toxic.

Patricia smiled a cold, razor-thin smile. The trap had sprung, and we were both caught inside its teeth. But as I lay there, staring at the ceiling, a cold, hard resolve began to replace my panic. Patricia thought she had won. She thought pushing me off that terrace was the final stroke of her master plan.
She had no idea that the secret hidden inside my body wasn't just a medical anomaly—it was the exact key that was going to unlock the darkest secrets of the Carter family empire, and bring every single one of their crimes crashing down around them.
