Chapter 4 - The Unraveling of Patricia Carter

The luxury suite was dead silent except for the frantic hum of the refrigerator. Daniel stood frozen in the center of the living room, his gaze locked onto the black screen of his fallen cell phone as if staring into an abyss. The fifty-million-dollar empire he had spent twelve grueling years building, the real estate portfolio that bore his grandfather’s name, the very foundation of his identity—gone. Stolen by his own mother.
“No,” Daniel whispered, shaking his head slowly. “No, that’s... that’s insane. My mother doesn't have the capital to launch a hostile takeover of Apex Holdings. She’s a board member, she has shares, but she doesn't have fifty million in liquid cash to buy out our primary debt!”
“Unless she didn't use her own money,” I said quietly, pushing myself up from the sofa despite the sharp twinge in my hip. I swung my legs over the side of the bed and stood up, steadying myself against the back of the couch.
Daniel looked at me, his eyes hollow. “What are you talking about?”
“Think about it, Daniel,” I urged, taking a cautious step forward. “Why did Patricia hate me from the very second we announced the pregnancy? Why was she so obsessed with the idea that I was after your money? Because she was the one trying to siphon it away! She knew the company was vulnerable during the restructuring. She needed a scapegoat. If she could frame me as a gold-digging cheat who faked a pregnancy, she could destroy your trust in me, isolate you, and execute her corporate coup while you were distracted by domestic chaos.”
Daniel stared at me, his chest rising and falling in shallow, rapid breaths. The pieces of the puzzle were clicking together with terrifying speed, forming a picture so dark and calculated it made my blood run cold.
“She forged my signature on the bank restructuring documents,” Daniel murmured, running a shaking hand through his disheveled hair. “She had access to my office safe. She knew every banking password I used.”
“And she pushed me off that terrace because I accidentally discovered something I shouldn't have,” I added, my voice hardening.
Daniel frowned, looking up sharply. “What are you talking about? What did you discover?”
I hesitated, remembering the afternoon before the dinner party. I had gone to Patricia’s sprawling estate in Lake Forest to drop off some paperwork for the family charity gala. While waiting in her study, I had noticed her home office printer humming, spitting out copies of a strange medical document alongside a corporate wire transfer confirmation addressed to a fertility clinic in Switzerland—a clinic specializing in advanced genetic sequencing and artificial reproductive technology.
I hadn't thought much of it at the time, assuming it was related to one of her philanthropic medical boards. But now...
“Before the dinner party, I went to your mother’s house,” I explained quickly. “I saw paperwork on her desk. Medical invoices, genetic profiling files, and wire transfers routed through Apex Holdings to a specialized reproductive clinic in Zurich.”
Daniel’s breath caught. “Zurich? Why would my mother be wiring money to a fertility clinic in Switzerland?”
Before I could answer, the front door of our suite unlocked with a sharp click.
The door swung open, and Patricia Carter walked in, uninvited, carrying a shopping bag from a high-end boutique on Michigan Avenue. She looked radiant, her posture stiff and authoritative, completely unaware that her corporate coup had just been exposed to us.
“Daniel, darling,” Patricia purred, stepping into the foyer and kicking off her designer heels. “I tried calling your office, but your CFO sounded positively hysterical. Something about accounts being frozen? Honestly, men in business panic so easily—”
She stopped dead in her tracks as she rounded the corner into the living room and saw both of us staring at her.
Daniel didn't yell. He didn't rage. He walked slowly toward her, his face carved out of gray stone.
“It wasn't a panic, Mom,” Daniel said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “It was an execution. You stole my company.”
Patricia blinked, adjusting her diamond brooch with trembling fingers, though she quickly smoothed her expression into one of icy disdain. “Don't be dramatic, Daniel. I saved your company. You were driving the real estate portfolio straight into the ground with your reckless expansion plans. I merely stepped in to protect the Carter family legacy.”
“By forging my signature? By working with Apex Holdings behind my back?” Daniel shouted, the dam finally breaking. “That’s not protecting the legacy, Mom! That’s theft! That’s federal fraud!”
Patricia’s chin tilted upward defiantly. “I built this empire with your father long before you were even a thought in my head, Daniel! You think you earned all this? You were handed a silver spoon! And you were about to hand half of it over to this... this opportunistic nobody!” She pointed a venomous finger directly at me.
“Leave me out of your corporate crimes, Patricia,” I stepped forward, my voice steady and resolute, ignoring the pain in my abdomen. “You can blame me for being a gold-digger all you want, but you can’t hide what you did in Zurich.”
Patricia’s face went instantly, deathly pale. The triumphant smirk vanished, replaced by a flicker of pure, unadulterated panic.
“What... what did you say?” she whispered, her voice losing its crisp authority.
“I saw the paperwork on your desk, Patricia,” I said, closing the distance between us until I was standing right in front of her. “The medical invoices. The wire transfers to the Zurich fertility clinic. The genetic profiling files.”
Patricia’s eyes darted wildly toward Daniel, who was now staring at his mother with a look of horror so profound it seemed to age him ten years.
“Daniel, she’s lying,” Patricia stammered, her voice cracking for the first time. “She’s a lunatic! She’s trying to cover up her own infidelity—!”
“No, Patricia,” I interrupted, a cold, fierce realization dawning in my mind with the terrifying clarity of a lightning strike. “I didn't cheat on Daniel. I never have. But someone did tamper with my body. Someone had access to our home, our private lives, and our medical records during our IVF consultations last year.”
Daniel spun around to face his mother, his voice a hoarse roar. “Mom... tell me she’s lying. Tell me you had nothing to do with those clinic files.”
Patricia opened her mouth, trembling violently, unable to form a single word. And in that heavy, suffocating silence, the final, most horrifying piece of the puzzle clicked into place. The superfetation. The two different fathers. The genetic anomaly on the ultrasound monitor.

It wasn't an act of infidelity. It was a biological assault.
And Patricia Carter was holding the smoking gun.
