Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Corporate Empire

The next forty-eight hours passed in a blur of agonizing physical recovery and mental torture.

The hospital discharged me on strict bed rest, warning that the trauma from the fall and the delicate nature of the superfetation pregnancy put both embryos at extreme risk. But home was no longer a sanctuary. Daniel rented a temporary, fully serviced luxury suite near downtown Chicago, claiming it was closer to the medical specialists we needed to see, but the truth was painfully obvious: he couldn't bear to bring me back to our home.

The trust we had built over three years had evaporated in the harsh glare of a medical monitor.

Daniel spent most of his time locked in the suite’s study, surrounded by corporate financial reports, phone calls with his restructuring team, and legal consultations. He was fighting a hostile corporate takeover of Carter Real Estate Investments, a battle orchestrated by a mysterious conglomerate called Apex Holdings.

I sat propped up on the living room sofa, staring blankly at the Chicago skyline through the floor-to-ceiling windows, my hand resting gently over my abdomen.

Two babies. Two fathers.

The phrase echoed in my mind like a recurring drumbeat. The medical literature Dr. Vance had provided explained that superfetation—becoming pregnant while already pregnant—was exceptionally rare in humans, usually occurring when an ovulation cycle happens despite an existing pregnancy. But the second part—heteropaternal superfecundation, where two eggs from the same cycle are fertilized by sperm from two different men—meant that somewhere, somehow, cellular material from another man had entered my body during a very specific, narrow window of time.

A window when I had been completely faithful to Daniel.

Or so I thought.

The front door chimed, and Daniel walked into the living room. He looked exhausted, his designer suit rumpled, dark circles bruising the skin beneath his eyes. He hadn't shaved in two days, and the sight of him broke my heart all over again.

“How are you feeling?” he asked quietly, keeping a careful, agonizing distance between us as he set his briefcase by the door.

“The cramping has stopped,” I answered, my voice small. “The doctors said the embryos are stabilizing.”

Daniel nodded slowly, shoving his hands into his trouser pockets. He looked out the window, avoiding my eyes. “Good. That’s... that’s good.”

“Daniel, we need to talk,” I said, mustering every ounce of strength I had left. I pushed myself up slightly against the pillows. “You can’t keep hiding in that office. You can’t keep looking at me like I’m a stranger who broke into your life.”

He turned sharply, a flash of raw frustration crossing his features. “How do you expect me to look at you, Emily?! The medical report is signed by three independent specialists! They confirmed it! It’s biological fact! You expect me to just smile, kiss your forehead, and pretend my wife didn't conceive a child with another man while we were trying to start a family?!”

“I didn't!” I shouted back, the injustice of it igniting a fierce fire in my chest. “I have never been with anyone else! You know my schedule, you know my life, you know every single minute I spend outside of work! When would I even have had the time or the opportunity to cheat on you, Daniel?!”

“I don't know!” he yelled, his voice cracking with anguish. “That’s what’s driving me insane! I trusted you more than I trusted my own mother! And now... now I feel like I don't know you at all.”

“Your mother,” I said bitterly, the name tasting like poison. “Your mother tried to kill me, Daniel. She literally pushed me off a terrace four stories high to get rid of me and this baby. And you’re standing here debating whether I’m a slut or a gold-digger while she walks around free!”

“My mother is a difficult woman, she’s abrasive, she’s ruthless in business—!”

“She’s a murderer!” I interrupted, my voice trembling with rage. “She looked me in the eye and told me she was going to make sure my little performance ended tonight! And then she shoved me! If that glass panel hadn't partially broken my fall onto the lower terrace, I’d be in a morgue right now!”

Daniel closed his eyes, pinching the bridge of his nose. “The hotel security footage was corrupted, Emily. The cameras on that section of the terrace were undergoing maintenance. There’s no physical proof she pushed you. The police spoke to her; she said you lost your balance during an argument. Without proof, I can’t... I can’t just cut my mother out of my life based on an accusation.”

A cold, dead weight settled in my stomach. He was protecting her. Even now, even after everything, the Carter family ties and the fifty million dollars held more weight than my life or my innocence.

“You don't want proof, Daniel,” I whispered, tears spilling over my lashes. “You want an excuse to believe her. You wanted out of this marriage, and this medical anomaly is the golden ticket you and your mother were looking for.”

Daniel flinched as if I had struck him. He opened his mouth to speak, but before he could utter a single word, his cell phone buzzed loudly on the coffee table.

He glanced down at the screen. The color drained from his face entirely.

“What is it?” I asked, my heart skipping a beat.

Daniel answered the call, putting it on speaker with trembling fingers.

“Mr. Carter,” a frantic voice echoed through the room. It was Thomas Vance, the chief financial officer of Carter Real Estate Investments. “We have a catastrophic situation. Apex Holdings just executed the final phase of the hostile takeover. They didn't just buy out our secondary debt... they just seized our primary corporate accounts. Every single dollar of liquidity we had has been frozen.”

Daniel grabbed the phone, lifting it to his ear. “That’s impossible! We restructured the debt last month! We have a signed agreement with the bank!”

“The agreement was forged, Mr. Carter,” the CFO’s voice trembled. “The signature on the bank restructuring documents... it wasn't yours. And the master accounts were transferred this morning to an offshore holding entity managed by... by Apex Holdings.”

“Who owns Apex Holdings?!” Daniel roared.

There was a terrifying pause on the other end of the line.

“The primary shareholder and beneficial owner of Apex Holdings, Mr. Carter... is Patricia Carter. Your mother.”

The phone slipped from Daniel’s hand, clattering onto the hardwood floor.

The fifty-million-dollar empire wasn't being taken over by a rival company. Patricia Carter had just stolen everything her son owned, right out from under him. And as Daniel stared blankly at the floor, the horrifying realization hit us both: Patricia didn't just want me out of the picture. She was systematically destroying everyone who stood between her and absolute control of the Carter dynasty.
