Chapter 5 - The Origin of the Seven Million

Richard looked like an animal cornered in a deep trench. The polished patriarch of Cleveland society was unraveling by the second.

"Arthur didn't want the boy's parents squandering it," Richard muttered, his voice barely audible over the hum of the air conditioning.

"Louder, Richard," Dad pressed.

"The trust dictates that the designated legal guardian must establish permanent residence outside the jurisdiction of the United States within twelve months of the child's first birthday," Richard snapped, his eyes flashing with sudden rage. "Arthur believed the American tax system and legal courts were fundamentally corrupt. If the child is not legally domiciled in a designated non-extradition canton in Switzerland by Noah’s first birthday, the entire seven-million-dollar fund dissolves and redirects to Arthur’s trust foundation in Zurich!"

I felt the blood drain from my face. "Today is Noah’s first birthday."

"Today," Dad confirmed grimly. "Arthur’s trust stipulated that the funds vest upon the child’s first birthday, provided physical custody and residence papers are executed in Switzerland by the designated trustee before the clock runs out. But Daniel and Emily were never named trustees, were they?"

Daniel flipped the binder open frantically, his fingers tearing through the exhibits until he hit the custody nomination page.

His breath hitched. He pointed a shaking finger at the signature line.

"This... this is my signature," Daniel stammered, looking at the black ink. "And Emily’s. Transferring primary physical custody and financial guardianship of Noah to Richard and Patricia Cole for the purposes of overseas educational administration. Emily... did you sign this?"

"I have never seen that paper in my entire life!" I screamed.

Daniel looked up, his face twisted in horror. "I didn't sign this either. This is a forgery. You forged our names to give yourselves custody of my son?"

"It’s not a forgery, it's a technicality!" Patricia cried out, completely hysterical now. "You don't understand, Daniel! Cole Trans-Logistics is bankrupt! We are three weeks away from an indictment for bank fraud! We owe creditors over six million dollars! If we don't present the Swiss trustee with Noah and the executed guardianship orders by Monday morning, the bank will seize the lake house, Marcus will lose his firm, and your father will go to federal prison!"

The truth hung in the air like toxic vapor.

They didn't come to Noah's birthday party to eat cake.

They came to steal an infant, cash out a dead uncle's seven-million-dollar trust to pay off their fraudulent business debts, and leave Daniel and me searching for our son across international borders.
