Chapter 8 - The Hidden Wire

Within three minutes, the tranquil afternoon shattered completely.

Two marked Columbus Police cruisers screeched to a halt at the curb, their red and blue strobes painting the front windows in rhythmic flashes of color. Uniformed officers spilled out, sidearms unholstered at low-ready, followed immediately by an unmarked sedan driven by Detective Miller—Dad's former partner of twelve years.

The backyard guests, alerted by the deafening sirens, crowded around the side gate in stunned bewilderment. Sarah was standing across the street, holding Noah safe inside her locked car, her eyes glued to our front porch.

Miller kicked open the front door, his service weapon drawn, taking in the scene in a single professional glance: Marcus pinned under Daniel on the dining room floor, Richard on his knees with Dad holding lethal cover, and Patricia weeping hysterically on a kitchen barstool.

"Clear," Miller shouted to the uniforms. "Holster up. Secure the two males in the foyer and dining room."

Within sixty seconds, the sharp metallic ratchets of handcuffs echoed through our home.

Marcus was hauled up from the dining room rug, spitting blood from a split lip, his eyes burning with hatred as he glared at Daniel. Richard didn't utter a single syllable as the young patrol officer jerked his arms behind his back and clicked the cuffs onto his wrists.

"Lieutenant," Miller nodded respectfully to my father, who had already holstered his Glock and was carefully collecting the shredded documents from the floor. "Dispatch said you had an active kidnapping attempt."

"That's affirmative, Mark," Dad said, handing Miller the black leather binder. "You'll find forged guardianship orders, an intercepted federal passport belonging to my grandson, and tickets for an international flight departing Cleveland-Hopkins at 9:00 PM tonight bound for Zurich."

"That's a lie!" Patricia sobbed, rushing toward the living room before a female officer gently but firmly blocked her path. "We were just going on vacation! A family vacation! My husband is an innocent man!"

Miller didn't even look at her. He looked at Dad. "What about the recording on dispatch?"

Dad pulled his personal phone from his pocket, detached a tiny black Bluetooth receiver the size of a coin from beneath the console table's lower lip, and held it up.

"I planted a magnetic transmitter on Richard's Lincoln Navigator the second they parked in the driveway at 1:45 PM," Dad explained calmly. "They sat inside the vehicle for twelve minutes before walking up to the front door. The entire conspiracy—the seven-million-dollar trust, the plan to drug Emily's wine if she resisted, the flight manifest, and the foreign shell bank—is digitally recorded on my secure cloud server."

My knees nearly gave out beneath me.

*Drugging my wine.*

I gripped the doorframe to keep from fainting. Daniel caught me around the waist, pulling me into his chest, his whole body wracked with dry, silent sobs of utter disgust and betrayal.

"You were going to poison her?" Daniel choked out, glaring at his mother. "You were going to drug my wife?"

Patricia buried her face in her hands, refusing to look up.

"Mark," Dad said to Detective Miller, his voice deadly serious. "Call the FBI field office in Cincinnati. This crosses state lines and involves international child trafficking, wire fraud, and grand larceny. Hand them over to the feds."

May you like

Miller grinned grimly. "With pleasure, Lieutenant. Move 'em out, boys."
