Chapter 12 - Shadows in the Penthouse

The private elevator of the Montgomery Tower rose smoothly, bypassing the lower floors where chaos still reigned. Inside the cabin stood Rachel, Nathan, and Secretary Park. The air was cool, scented faintly of expensive white tea and ozone.
"The liquidation of their primary assets is proceeding faster than anticipated," Secretary Park reported, tapping rhythmically on her titanium tablet. "All primary bank accounts belonging to Diane and Trevor have been frozen by court order. By tomorrow morning, they won't even be able to buy a cup of coffee without our authorization."
Nathan stared out the glass wall of the elevator as the city skyline stretched out beneath them, a vast network of twinkling lights and towering monuments to corporate ambition. "My father built this empire on the backs of everyone he stepped on," Nathan said softly, his reflection ghosting over the night view. "I used to hate him for it. Now... I almost feel pity. He spent his whole life guarding a throne made of sand."
Rachel turned her head, looking up at him. The harsh fluorescent lighting of the elevator softened as it passed a junction floor, casting a warm shadow across her striking features. "Pity is a luxury we don't have time for, Nathan. The corporate board of Vance Global is meeting at dawn to vote on the final restructuring. If we show any weakness now, the secondary shareholders will try to block the merger."
"I have no intention of showing weakness," Nathan replied, turning to meet her gaze directly. There was a quiet intensity between them—a forged-in-fire bond born from years of shared betrayal, strategic planning, and absolute survival. "Every single person who laughed at us when we were at rock bottom is about to learn what it means to stand in our shadow."
The elevator dinged softly, doors sliding open to reveal the sprawling penthouse suite that had once belonged to Harold Montgomery.
It was a masterpiece of modern architecture: floor-to-ceiling glass, minimalist designer furniture, art pieces worth millions hanging on stark white walls. But tonight, it felt like a tomb. Boxes were already stacked near the double doors—the personal belongings of the deposed dynasty, packed away by the cleaning staff under strict instructions.
As Rachel stepped into the foyer, her heels clicking on the imported Italian marble, her phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out, glancing at the screen. A cryptic message from an unknown number flashed across the OLED display: *The game isn't over yet, Rachel. You forgot about the Berlin accounts.*
Rachel’s eyes narrowed instantly. She stopped dead in her tracks, a cold wave of adrenaline washing over her senses.
"What is it?" Nathan asked, noticing the sudden shift in her posture. He stepped closer, scanning her face.
"Someone just sent a ping," Rachel said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. She turned the screen toward him. "The Berlin accounts. The ones Harold supposedly closed five years ago."
Nathan’s jaw tightened. "If those accounts are still active, it means there’s a secondary offshore fund holding at least four hundred million dollars. Enough to rebuild an entire faction from scratch."
"And if Harold’s loyalists get to it before our auditors do, they can mount a hostile takeover attempt by the end of the week," Rachel concluded, her mind racing through a dozen tactical scenarios in a fraction of a second. She looked back at Secretary Park, who had just stepped out of the elevator. "Park, cancel my morning meetings. Get our chief forensic accountant on a secure line to Frankfurt immediately. We’re flying out tonight."
Nathan stepped closer to Rachel, his hand gently resting on her arm, grounding her amidst the sudden storm. "I’m coming with you," he said, leaving no room for argument. "Berlin is where my father hid his darkest secrets. You’ll need someone who knows where the bodies are buried."
May you like
Rachel looked down at his hand on her arm, then up into his steady, unyielding eyes. A rare, genuine smile touched the corners of her lips—sharp, brilliant, and completely fearless. "Then let's go hunt some ghosts, Nathan."
