Chapter 15 - Darkness in the Server Room

The interior of the Frankfurt Central Bank server room was pitch black, save for the frantic, blinking red and amber LEDs of dying mainframe racks. Emergency backup systems hummed with a low, desperate vibration, struggling to reboot against the forced system reset.
In the center of the subterranean chamber stood Director Vance, his silver hair disheveled, sweat dripping from his chin as he stared in horror at the blank screens of his terminal.
"What happened?!" Director Vance yelled across the dark room to his lead technician, his voice cracking with rising panic. "Where did the power go?!"
"The main grid has been severed!" the technician shouted back, typing frantically on a battery-powered laptop. "Someone forced a global hard reset! The master keys are resetting—we’re losing connection to the Swiss vault!"
"Restore it! Do whatever it takes, override the protocol!" Vance lunged forward, his hands slamming onto the keyboard. "If we lose this window, Harold is finished, and we go down with him!"
Before the technician could respond, the heavy steel-reinforced security door at the end of the hall echoed with a series of heavy, rhythmic thuds. *Bang. Bang. Bang.*
Then, the biometric lock on the door flashed bright green.
The heavy vault doors hissed open, hydraulic pistons releasing a cloud of chilled mist into the warm, stale air of the server room.
Framed in the doorway stood Rachel Vance, her dark trench coat swirling around her boots like smoke, her expression as impassive and cold as a winter storm. Beside her stood Nathan Montgomery, a heavy tactical flashlight casting a blinding beam of light directly into Director Vance’s eyes.
Director Vance shielded his eyes with a trembling hand, stumbling backward until his spine hit the cold metal casing of a mainframe rack. "Rachel... Nathan... how... how did you bypass the security perimeter so fast?"
Rachel walked slowly into the room, her high heels clicking against the metal grating, each step sounding like a countdown to execution. She stopped just a few feet away from him, looking down at the panicked man as if he were nothing more than an insect caught in her web.
"You really thought you could outsmart a system you helped build, Uncle?" Nathan’s voice was low, laced with a quiet, lethal fury that made the older man flinch. "You spent your whole life whispering in my father’s ear, teaching him how to betray everyone around him. But you forgot one simple rule."
Rachel leaned in slightly, her dark eyes locking onto Vance’s terrified gaze. "Never play a game with someone who has nothing left to lose," she finished, her voice silky and lethal.
Secretary Park stepped past them, walking straight to the primary terminal. With a swift, practiced motion, she plugged a small, silver Vance Global master drive into the central port. The screens across the room instantly flashed from red to a brilliant, victorious blue.
*System Overwrite Complete. Welcome, Chief Executive Officer Rachel Vance.*
Director Vance slumped against the server rack, his legs finally giving out beneath him. He stared at the glowing blue screens, knowing that every offshore account, every hidden asset, and every criminal transaction he had accumulated over the last decade had just been wiped, seized, and transferred into Vance Global’s permanent reserves.
"Take him away," Rachel said coldly, turning her back on her defeated uncle without a second glance.
As security operatives moved in to cuff Director Vance and drag him out of the room, Nathan stepped up beside Rachel. He looked at the glowing screens, then down at her, the tension of the long night finally giving way to a profound, unspoken triumph.
"Well," Nathan murmured, a slow, appreciative smile touching his lips. "That’s one more rat out of the way. What’s our next move?"
May you like
Rachel turned to face him, the ambient blue light of the triumph reflecting in her eyes. The war for the empire was far from over—there were still shadows lurking in the global markets, and enemies waiting in the wings—but tonight, the throne was firmly hers.
"We go back to New York, Nathan," Rachel said softly, her gaze holding his with a promise of everything yet to come. "The real board meeting is just beginning."
