Chapter 14 - The Frankfurt Terminal

The private jet touched down on the tarmac of Frankfurt International Airport with a violent screech of tires, the brakes smoking as the pilot wrestled the heavy aircraft to a halt on the rain-slicked runway. Outside, a heavy European mist clung to the ground, illuminated only by the glaring halogen lights of security vehicles and black Mercedes vans waiting at the base of the mobile staircase.
The door hissed open, and the freezing, damp wind rushed into the cabin. Rachel was the first down the metal steps, her long black trench coat billowing behind her like the wings of a dark angel. Nathan followed closely at her shoulder, his hand resting lightly inside his coat near a concealed security holster. Secretary Park and two armed tactical operatives brought up the rear.
Waiting at the bottom of the stairs was Marcus Bauer, the local director of Vance Global’s European division, looking soaked and visibly panicked.
"Ms. Vance! Mr. Montgomery!" Bauer shouted over the roar of the jet engines, hurrying forward with an umbrella. "Thank God you’re here. We’ve locked down the main server room at the central bank, but the breach is deeper than we anticipated."
"Talk to me while we move," Rachel ordered, not breaking her stride as she headed straight for the waiting Mercedes van.
"Director Vance didn't just access the accounts," Bauer panted, jogging to keep up with her rapid pace. "He brought a physical decryption hard drive containing master cryptographic keys. He’s attempting a complete system overwrite. If he succeeds, the entire European asset ledger will be wiped clean, and ownership will revert to the original founding trust—which, under old bylaws, defaults to Harold Montgomery."
"He’s trying to legally steal the empire back through a loophole in the foundational charter," Nathan growled, ducking into the sleek interior of the black van.
Rachel slid across the leather bench seat, her fingers already working on her encrypted tablet. "Not if we lock him out first. Bauer, did you activate the kill switch on the Frankfurt server?"
"I tried," Bauer said, climbing into the passenger seat as the van sped off across the tarmac toward the financial district. "But the firewall has been reinforced with a military-grade counter-encryption. Every time our team tries to inject the shutdown code, their system triggers an automated trap that threatens to delete the entire database permanently."
"They’re holding the database hostage," Secretary Park observed, her fingers dancing across her own terminal. "If we force a shutdown, we lose the transaction records forever, making it impossible to prove embezzlement. If we wait, Director Vance completes the transfer."
Silence descended inside the moving van as the neon lights of Frankfurt’s financial district blurred past the rain-streaked windows. The stakes couldn't have been higher: one wrong move, and months of meticulous planning would vanish into a digital void.
Rachel closed her eyes for a single heartbeat, visualizing the entire corporate network like a chessboard. Every move, every counter-move, every hidden trap. When she opened her eyes, they were cold, clear, and absolutely certain.
"Park," Rachel said quietly. "Don't attack the firewall."
Park paused, looking back in confusion. "Ma'am?"
"If they built a defensive wall, it means they’re expecting us to break in through the front door," Rachel explained, a thin, razor-sharp smile playing on her lips. "Instead of attacking the firewall, we’re going to reroute the entire primary power grid of the Frankfurt exchange through our secondary satellite link in Zurich. We’re not breaking the wall—we’re cutting off their oxygen."
Bauer gasped from the front seat. "If you cut the grid, the entire building goes dark. The emergency generators will kick in, but they have a thirty-second delay. In those thirty seconds, the server will be unpowered, resetting the cryptographic lock automatically!"
"Exactly," Rachel said, her voice dropping into a lethal whisper. "And when the power comes back on, our master key will be the only one waiting in the system. Execute the sequence on my mark."
The van screeched to a halt outside the towering glass-and-steel monolith of the Frankfurt Central Bank. Armed security guards in black tactical gear stood at the entrance, their faces tense.
Rachel checked her watch. The digital seconds ticked down.
"Three... two... one... execute."
Secretary Park pressed a single red key on her console.
May you like
Across the entire district, a massive flash of lightning seemed to strike as the lights of the towering bank suddenly flickered, hissed, and died entirely, plunging the multi-story financial fortress into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
