Chapter 11 - Maya’s Backyard

While the legal storm raged around Ben and his family, I refused to let Lily’s eighth year begin in shadows.
On Wednesday afternoon, with the help of Mrs. Patterson and three other mothers from Lily’s school, we organized a real party. It wasn't at a $2,500 commercial venue with rigid rules and pretentious contracts.
It was in Mrs. Patterson’s sprawling backyard.
There was a bouncy castle in the corner, a table piled high with homemade pizza, and a giant chocolate ice-cream cake decorated with edible glitter and sugar flowers. Every single girl from Lily’s class showed up, along with their parents.
When Lily ran into the backyard and saw the huge banner reading *HAPPY REAL BIRTHDAY, LILY!*, she stopped in her tracks. Her eyes widened, and when Mrs. Patterson handed her the very first, enormous slice of cake, Lily didn't look afraid.
She smiled—a wide, gap-toothed, radiant smile—and took a huge bite, getting chocolate frosting all over her nose.
