Chapter 8 - The Midnight Knock

At 11:30 PM, after Lily was fast asleep in her bed with her favorite storybook tucked under her arm, the front doorbell rang.
Then came three loud, hurried knocks.
I stood at the top of the stairs, looking down into the foyer. The glass beside the front door revealed Ben’s silhouette. He was pacing, running his hands through his hair.
My phone buzzed in my pocket. A text from Ben: *Claire, open the door. It’s freezing out here. We need to talk like adults. I brought you some flowers. Let’s just fix this.*
I didn't move. I typed back: *The door stays locked. Go to your sister’s.*
*Ben: Claire, stop this insanity! You locked me out of our home! I have a right to be here! If you don't unlock this door in two minutes, I’m using my key.*
*Me: If you put your key in that lock, the security alarm will trigger and I will call the police to report a domestic disturbance. I have copies of the bank statements and the signed catering contract. Sarah Vance is filing our emergency custody petition in nine hours. Walk away.*
Silence followed.
Through the glass, I saw Ben freeze. He stared at his phone screen, his posture slumping. He looked up at the door, his face pale and haggard under the porch light. He knew who Sarah Vance was; Sarah had handled the messy divorce of his former boss two years ago, stripping the man down to his socks.
He stepped back off the porch. He didn't text again. He walked down the driveway and got into a silver sedan parked at the curb—a brand-new luxury crossover with temporary dealer tags.
Apex Luxury Auto Leasing. The car paid for with my daughter’s college fund.

He drove away into the dark.
