Chapter 20 - The Ninth Birthday

The morning sun spilled across the backyard of our home, painting the freshly cut green grass in warm golden light.

A large marquee tent stood near the rose bushes, decorated with bright yellow sunflowers and fairy lights. Long tables were covered in white linen, loaded with trays of gourmet sliders, wood-fired personal pizzas, fresh fruit skewers, and a cascading chocolate fountain surrounded by marshmallows and strawberries.

Twenty children from Lily’s fourth-grade class, her soccer team, and the neighborhood were splashing in the pool, their laughter echoing through the trees.

At the center table stood a three-tiered masterpiece of a cake, decorated like a magical forest with handmade sugar butterflies, spun-sugar flowers, and gold dust. In the center, spelled out in glowing pastel icing, were the words:

*LILY’S WORLD – TASTE EVERY DREAM.*

I stood beside Mrs. Patterson, watching Lily run toward the table with her friends. She wore a bright yellow sundress, her hazel eyes dancing with pure, unadulterated happiness.

“Make a wish, birthday girl!” someone called out.

Lily didn't hesitate. She didn't look over her shoulder. She didn't ask for permission. She grabbed a strawberry, dipped it deep into the warm chocolate fountain, and popped it into her mouth with a triumphant grin.

I felt a tear slip down my cheek, but for the first time in a very long time, it was a tear of pure, unshakeable peace.

Lily caught my eye across the lawn. She held up a chocolate-covered strawberry, giggled, and ran straight into my open arms.

She was full. She was safe. And her plate would never be empty again.
