Chapter 13 - The Boardroom Ambush

On Monday morning, Richard Hayes made his final, desperate gambit.

Still believing that Sterling Holdings was operated by an invisible board of nameless financiers who cared only about numbers, Richard managed to secure an emergency creditor meeting through his disreputable attorney, Arthur Pendelton.

Richard had managed to scrape together seventy thousand dollars in cash from a hidden personal safe. He walked into the skyscraper headquarters of Sterling Financial Holdings wearing his last clean suit, his hair slicked back, trying desperately to project the aura of a powerful businessman facing a temporary liquidity hiccup.

“Arthur,” Richard whispered to his lawyer as they rode the brass-lined elevator to the forty-second floor. “These Wall Street types don’t care about Clara’s personal vendetta. They care about returns. We offer them seventy thousand upfront, agree to a restructured eight-percent repayment plan over ten years, and they’ll overrule Clara in five minutes. Boards don’t throw away millions over family squabbles.”

“Just let me do the talking, Richard,” Pendelton muttered, wiping nervous sweat from his brow.

The elevator doors opened to an expanse of polished black marble and floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking the city. A receptionist in a sharp charcoal suit bowed slightly.

“Mr. Hayes? The Managing Director and the executive committee are waiting for you in the Grand Boardroom.”

Richard adjusted his tie, threw his shoulders back, and pushed open the heavy frosted-glass doors of the boardroom.

“Gentlemen, I appreciate you taking the time to meet with—”

The words choked in Richard’s throat.

There was no committee of Wall Street executives.

There were no elderly bankers sitting with spreadsheets.

At the head of the twenty-seat mahogany conference table sat a single woman.

I wore an impeccably tailored charcoal suit, my hands folded calmly on the polished wood. To my right sat Jonathan Vance. To my left sat two agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, wearing dark suits and carrying badges on their lapels.

Richard took two steps backward, his hand grasping blindly for the doorknob.

“What... what is this?” Richard stammered, his face turning an ashen gray. “Where is the board?”

“I am the board, Richard,” I said.
