Chapter 14 - Face to Face

Jonathan Vance gestured toward the two empty leather chairs opposite me.

“Take a seat, Mr. Hayes. Mr. Pendelton. We have much to discuss before the federal marshals process your intake.”

Arthur Pendelton looked at the FBI badges, swallowed hard, and immediately backed away toward the wall. “I... I was unaware of the nature of this meeting. Mr. Hayes engaged my services strictly under the pretense of standard corporate restructuring.”

“Arthur, shut up!” Richard hissed, trembling violently. He turned his bloodshot eyes toward me, clutching the back of a chair for balance. “Clara... what did you do? What did you tell these men?”

Special Agent Miller—an ironic name—stepped forward, opening a blue folder.

“Richard Hayes. We have executed federal search warrants on Hayes Logistics’ primary server arrays and your personal residence. We have recovered bank drafts, forged insurance transfer mandates, and email correspondence between you and your accountant detailing the intentional interception of a $450,000 life insurance payout belonging to Mrs. Clara Miller.”

Agent Miller looked up, his expression thoroughly disgusted.

“You used those funds to settle personal lines of credit and make down payments on luxury vehicles for your younger daughter. That constitutes wire fraud, bank fraud, and aggravated identity theft under federal statutes.”

Richard’s knees gave out. He collapsed into the leather chair, burying his face in his trembling hands.

“Clara...” he sobbed, his voice muffled by his fingers. “I did it to save the company... Hayes Logistics was my life's work! If the company went under, we would have lost everything! I was going to pay you back! I swear to God, I was going to pay you back every cent once our freight contracts renewed!”

“You let me live in a basement with mold on the walls,” I said, my voice ringing clear and steady through the quiet room. “You knew I couldn’t afford to heat the room. You knew I was eating expired canned goods from the food bank. And you never intended to pay back a single cent.”

Richard looked up, tears cutting through the wrinkles of his worn face.

“I’m your father, Clara! Doesn’t thirty years of fatherhood mean anything to you? I taught you how to ride a bike! I paid for your college! How can you look at me sitting here in front of federal agents and feel nothing?”

I leaned forward, looking into the eyes of the man who had abandoned me at the edge of three open graves.

“When Mark died, when Toby died, when Lily died... my soul died with them, Richard. The girl you raised died that morning. The woman sitting here today is simply the executor of your consequences.”

Agent Miller stepped behind Richard’s chair and withdrew a pair of stainless steel handcuffs.

“Richard Hayes, you are under arrest. You have the right to remain silent.”

The sharp *click* of the cuffs echoed through the silent boardroom.

Richard didn’t fight. He didn’t scream. As the two agents pulled him to his feet and led him toward the private elevator, he looked like a broken old shell of a man, stripped of his pride, his money, and his family.
