Chapter 15 - The Golden Child Crumbles

With Richard in federal custody and Chloe’s mansion seized, the final remnants of the Hayes family fantasy dissolved within forty-eight hours.

Chloe had taken refuge in the luxury apartment of her fiancé, Julian Vance-Pritchard—an ambitious investment heir who had proposed to her four months earlier, largely drawn to the image of the Hayes family’s supposed shipping fortune.

On Wednesday afternoon, I received a short video clip forwarded by Jonathan Vance.

It was security footage from the lobby of Julian’s high-rise building.

Julian’s private security guards were carrying three large pink designer suitcases out through the rotating doors and placing them onto the sidewalk in the pouring rain. A moment later, Chloe rushed out behind them, screaming, her makeup ruined, clutching Julian’s arm.

Julian shoved her hand off his cashmere sleeve with utter contempt.

“You lied to me about everything!” Julian’s voice was picked up by the exterior cameras. “Your father is facing twenty years in federal prison! Your house was repossessed! You’re named as an unindicted co-conspirator in an insurance fraud investigation! My family’s firm is dropping you like a stone. Don’t you ever contact me again.”

“Julian, please!” Chloe shrieked, falling to her knees on the wet sidewalk, grabbing the hem of his trousers. “I love you! It was Clara! My sister set us up! I don’t have anywhere to go!”

Julian pulled his leg away, disgusted, and walked back inside the building. The glass doors slid shut, and the security guard locked them from the inside.

Chloe sat on the wet pavement, surrounded by her pink suitcases, while the city traffic splashed muddy water across her designer boots.

Pedestrians walked by, filming her with their phones, laughing and pointing. The queen of social media had become the internet’s favorite cautionary tale.

I closed the video file.

There was no joy in watching her ruin. Only a profound, heavy silence. They had spent their entire lives treating other people like stepping stones, believing that beauty, money, and arrogance would shield them from reality.

Now, the bill had come due, and they had nothing left to pay with.
