Chapter 5 - The Boy in the Shadows

The sub-basement of the Moretti mansion smelled of damp limestone, iron, and centuries of secrets.

Located four stories beneath the surface, behind reinforced blast doors, this was a place that did not exist on any architectural blueprint of New York. The walls were three feet of solid bedrock. No scream, no plea, no gunshot had ever escaped these confines.

Victor Romano sat strapped to a heavy stainless-steel chair bolted directly into the stone floor. His right shoulder was heavily bandaged with rough gauze, soaked through with dark crimson blood. His designer shirt was shredded, his face bruised and pale from shock.

The heavy steel door creaked open.

Lucas stepped inside alone. He wore no jacket, only a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms. In his hands, he carried no weapons—only a leather folder and a cold, terrifying stillness that chilled the room far more than the underground air.

Victor lifted his head, his teeth clenched in agony. He tried to muster a contemptuous sneer, though his lips trembled.

"Lucas..." Victor rasped, spitting a mouthful of blood onto the concrete. "You're making a fool of yourself. You shot your own brother because of a fairy tale spun by a Bronx cleaning lady? Untie me, damn it! Let me call my doctors!"

Lucas didn't answer. He dragged a metal chair across the floor—the screech of metal on concrete echoing like a dying animal—and sat down three feet in front of Victor.

"Succinylcholine," Lucas said softly.

Victor froze. The sneer died on his face.

"A paralytic," Lucas continued, his voice calm, conversational, horrifyingly steady. "Clever, Victor. Truly brilliant. You knew my asthma flared up whenever the spring humidity spiked. You knew I kept an inhaler in my desk, one in my car, and one in my master suite. You swapped the bedroom canister yesterday afternoon when you brought me the quarterly shipping manifests."

Victor swallowed hard, his eyes darting frantically to the closed door behind Lucas. "Lucas, listen to me—"

"I don't need to listen to you," Lucas interrupted. "Dr. Wallace analyzed the chemical compound. The batch was synthesized using pharmaceutical-grade reagents traced to an offshore shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands under the corporate entity *Corvo Maritime.*"

Lucas leaned in, his gray eyes locking onto Victor's dilated pupils.

"Hello, Raven."

Victor slumped back against the steel chair as if all the bones in his body had turned to water. The mask of loyalty, brotherhood, and righteous indignation fell away completely, revealing the hollow, bitter monster beneath.

"You were always too soft for this world, Lucas," Victor sneered, his voice dropping an octave, losing all respect. "Your father was a wolf. Your grandfather was a king of blood. But you? You wanted to play house. You wanted to build schools and invest in clean logistics. You fell in love with a penniless piano teacher who poisoned your mind with dreams of peace!"

"So you put a bomb under her car," Lucas said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper.

"I had to!" Victor snarled, his eyes bulging with manic energy. "The syndicate was falling apart! The five families were laughing at us! You were going to dissolve the greatest empire on the East Coast just so you could watch your brat play Little League! Isabella had to die to wake you up! To bring back the monster we needed!"

"And Daniel?" Lucas asked, his heart hammering against his ribs, waiting for the words that would either give him life or destroy him forever. "Where is my son, Victor?"

A twisted, cruel grin stretched across Victor’s bloody lips.

"Ah," Victor whispered. "The boy. You think you're so smart, Lucas? You think you hold all the cards? Daniel is alive. But you will never find him without me."

Lucas didn't move. He didn't strike Victor. He merely watched him, his face an impenetrable mask of granite.

"I have a dead-man's protocol," Victor laughed, a wet, rattling sound in his chest. "A private security detail at an undisclosed compound upstate. Every twelve hours, I must send an encrypted confirmation ping from my personal phone. If that ping is missed... my men have standing orders. They put a bullet behind the boy's ear, burn the compound to the ground, and disappear across the Canadian border."

Victor leaned his head back, laughing hysterically into the bare lightbulb above.

"The next ping is due at dawn, Lucas! Exactly four hours from now! If you kill me, Daniel dies. If you keep me locked up, Daniel dies. Untie me, put me on a private jet to Zurich with fifty million dollars, or you will bury an empty casket next to your precious Isabella!"

Lucas slowly stood up. He reached into his pocket, pulled out Victor’s encrypted satellite smartphone, and tossed it onto Victor’s lap.

"Blackwood Ridge," Lucas said quietly.

Victor’s laughter died in his throat. The color drained from his face so fast he looked like a corpse. "What... what did you say?"

"The old Dutch stone estate near Dutchess County," Lucas said, pulling a folded satellite reconnaissance map from his leather folder and holding it before Victor's horrified eyes. "Surrounded by twelve-foot iron fences, heavy pine canopy, and private access roads. You thought Clara was just a random nurse, Victor. But your arrogance made you sloppy. You visited that playground last summer. Lily remembered your face. She remembered your tattoo. And she remembered seeing a red-haired boy with a scar on his chin through the fence."

Victor stared at the map, his breathing turning into panicked, hyperventilating wheezes. "No... no, that's impossible. A child couldn't... she couldn't know!"

"A child you overlooked just destroyed your entire empire," Lucas whispered, his voice vibrating with absolute authority.

Lucas turned toward the door.

"Gabe! Michael!"

The doors swung open. Ten heavily armed tactical operators—Lucas’s elite private strike force—stepped into the hallway, fully geared in black combat vests, night-vision helmets, and suppressed carbines.

"Prep the convoy and the Blackhawk," Lucas ordered, buckling a tactical combat harness over his chest. "We move on Blackwood Ridge right now. And leave Victor here in the dark. Let him count the minutes until dawn."

"Lucas! No! Wait!" Victor screamed, thrashing against his steel bonds as the heavy iron door slammed shut, plunging him into absolute, suffocating darkness.
