Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

The sun had fully risen when the Blackhawk touched down on the private roof pad of the Moretti estate.
Lucas carried Daniel down the internal staircase into the West Wing. The mansion was quiet, but every guard on duty stood at rigid attention, their heads bowed in profound, solemn respect as their don passed by with the lost heir in his arms.
When Lucas pushed open the doors of the sunroom, Clara was sitting beside the window, holding a sleeping Lily in her lap.
At the sound of the door, Clara looked up.
When she saw Daniel—alive, wrapped in Lucas’s coat, his gray eyes blinking against the morning light—Clara broke down. She covered her mouth with both hands, tears streaming down her face in silent, overwhelming relief.
Daniel looked at Clara, then down at Lily, whose soft breathing puffed against Clara’s shoulder.
"Daddy," Daniel whispered, tugging Lucas’s sleeve. "Is that the girl with the pink stars?"
Lucas smiled, setting Daniel gently on his feet. "Go on, son."
Daniel walked slowly across the sunroom. He stopped before Clara and Lily. With hesitant, gentle fingers, Daniel reached out and touched Lily’s tiny hand.
Lily’s eyelashes fluttered open. She rubbed her eyes with the back of her wrist, yawning, and blinked up at the boy standing before her.
"Hi," Daniel said shyly. "My name is Daniel."
Lily smiled—a bright, toothy, innocent smile that illuminated the entire room. "I know. You’re the boy from the picture. Did the mister bring you home?"
"Yeah," Daniel nodded, a tear slipping down his cheek. "He brought me home."
Clara wrapped her arms around both children, pulling them into a tight, protective embrace, weeping openly.
Lucas stood back, watching the three of them. A profound, sacred peace washed over his soul—a feeling he thought had been permanently erased from his existence.
Then, his phone buzzed.
It was Gabe. "Boss. Romano is awake in the sub-basement. It’s time."
Lucas’s expression hardened, but the blind, reckless rage that had consumed him for three years was gone. It had been replaced by a cold, righteous clarity.
"I’m coming down," Lucas said.
Five minutes later, Lucas walked into the cold limestone vault beneath the mansion.
Victor Romano was drenched in cold sweat, his breathing ragged, his face gray with absolute despair. He looked up as Lucas entered, flinching at the sight of his former don.
"You... you found him," Victor whispered, his voice trembling like a dry leaf. "Henderson didn't call. It’s over."
Lucas pulled up a chair and sat down in front of Victor. He reached into his pocket and placed two items on the small steel table between them: Victor’s encrypted smartphone, and the silver teardrop locket belonging to Isabella.
"I’m not going to kill you, Victor," Lucas said quietly.
Victor blinked, stunned. "What?"
"Death is an escape," Lucas said, his voice chillingly devoid of emotion. "A bullet takes a fraction of a second. You don't deserve that mercy. You robbed Isabella of her life. You robbed Daniel of three years of his childhood. You robbed this family of its peace."
Lucas leaned in, his gray eyes piercing into Victor’s soul.
"Twenty minutes ago, Marco transmitted a master encrypted file to the United States Department of Justice, the FBI, and Interpol. It contains twenty years of your personal financial records, your offshore accounts, your private hits, and the definitive proof that you coordinated the bombing on the BQE."
Victor’s mouth fell open in sheer, unadulterated terror. "Lucas... no. No! You can't give that to the feds! It will expose the entire syndicate!"
"There is no syndicate anymore, Victor," Lucas said with complete finality. "As of 6:00 AM, the Moretti family is dissolved. The illegal rackets are shut down. The ports have been transferred to a blind maritime trust. The cash reserves have been liquidated into educational charities and victim restitution funds."
Victor shook his head frantically, his chains rattling against the chair. "You're insane! The other families will hunt you down! They’ll slaughter you!"
"The other families received a private message from me an hour ago," Lucas murmured. "They know that if a single hair on Daniel’s head is touched, or if anyone approaches this estate, I will release the secondary files detailing their entire leadership structures. They have accepted the truce. They are terrified of me, Victor. But they will never have to see me again."
Lucas stood up, taking the silver locket off the table and placing it carefully back into his breast pocket, close to his heart.
"You, on the other hand, will spend the rest of your natural life in ADX Florence. Twenty-three hours a day in a concrete box, cut off from human contact, with only the memory of what you destroyed to keep you company. You wanted an empire, Raven. Enjoy your cage."
Lucas turned and walked toward the steel door.
"Lucas! Lucas, don't do this! Shoot me! Lucas, be a man and kill me!" Victor screamed, thrashing wildly against his restraints, his voice cracking into pathetic, desperate shrieks.
Lucas didn't look back.
May you like
He stepped through the heavy steel door, and with a resounding, thunderous boom, the door locked Victor Romano away from the light forever.
