Chapter 8 - The Reunion

For five agonizing seconds, the underground bunker was silent except for the distant drip of rain through concrete vents.

Daniel stared at the towering man kneeling in the doorway. The boy’s lower lip began to quiver. Slowly, he looked down at the faded drawing in his hands, then back up at Lucas’s face—at the strong jaw, the steel-gray eyes that were an exact mirror of his own, and the silver signet ring on Lucas’s finger bearing the Moretti family crest.

A memory, buried deep beneath three years of trauma and isolation, suddenly broke through the dark.

"Daddy?" Daniel whispered, his voice tiny, cracking with disbelief.

Lucas couldn't speak. A sob tore from his chest as he lunged forward, gathering the small boy into his arms. He pulled Daniel tightly against his chest, burying his face into his son’s hair.

Daniel was so light, so fragile. Lucas could feel every rib through the boy’s thin shirt. But Daniel was warm. He was breathing. His heart was hammering frantically against Lucas’s chest like a trapped bird finding its way out of a cage.

Daniel’s arms slowly came up, wrapping around his father’s neck with impossible, desperate strength.

"Daddy! Daddy!" Daniel wailed, bursting into violent, uncontrollable tears. "The bad men said you were dead! They said Mommy burned up and you were in the ground!"

"I’m here, baby," Lucas wept, rocking his son on the cold concrete floor, uncaring of the blood on his boots or the tactical gear digging into his flesh. "I’m here. You’re safe now. Nobody is ever going to take you away from me again. Never. I swear it on my life."

Gabe and Marco appeared at the vault door, their carbines lowered. Gabe, a hardened enforcer who had survived two mob wars, quickly wiped a tear from his cheek and turned his back to give the father and son privacy.

"Boss," Gabe cleared his throat gently. "The compound is secured. All hostiles eliminated or detained. The helicopter is touching down in the meadow. We need to move before local authorities track the gunfire."

Lucas nodded against Daniel’s shoulder. He gently pulled away, cupping his son’s face with both hands, wiping the tears from the boy’s pale cheeks with his thumbs.

"Can you walk, Daniel?" Lucas asked softly.

Daniel shook his head, burying his face back into Lucas’s neck. "Don't let me go, Daddy. Please."

Lucas pulled off his heavy combat vest and wrapped his warm cashmere jacket around Daniel’s small shoulders. He lifted his son into his arms, carrying him out of the vault like the most precious treasure on earth.

As they walked past the unconscious body of Henderson, Lucas didn't even spare the hitman a glance.

"Gabe," Lucas said, his voice returning to absolute, icy authority. "Burn this place to ash. Leave nothing standing."

"Consider it done, boss."

Ten minutes later, the twin-turbine Blackhawk helicopter lifted off from the muddy meadow of Blackwood Ridge, banking sharply south toward Manhattan.

Inside the cabin, Daniel sat securely in Lucas’s lap, wrapped in blankets, his hands clutching Lucas’s fingers as if letting go would make his father vanish. Daniel’s eyes were heavy with exhaustion, but he fought against sleep, terrified of waking up back in the cold bunker.

"Mommy gave me the drawing," Daniel whispered, his voice competing with the dull thrum of the helicopter rotors. "Before the fire. She told me to keep it inside my pillow. She said if I looked at it every night, an angel would guide you to me."

Lucas choked back another wave of emotion, kissing the top of Daniel’s head. "An angel did guide me, Daniel. A little girl named Lily."

"Who is Lily?" Daniel asked, his eyelids drooping.

"She’s the bravest girl in the world," Lucas smiled softly. "And she’s waiting for you at home."

As the helicopter crossed the Hudson River, the dark clouds began to part. The first golden rays of dawn broke over the Manhattan skyline, piercing the gray mist and bathing the glass towers in warm, radiant light.

For three years, dawn had only brought Lucas Moretti another day of blood, vengeance, and hollow survival.

Today, dawn brought the sunrise.
