Chapter 6 - The Traitor Within

The downtown safe house was a massive, high-security penthouse apartment overlooking the glowing skyline of Boston. Reinforced bulletproof glass, private security elevators, and dozens of heavily armed guards posted at every entrance turned the luxury residence into an impenetrable fortress.
For three days, we remained locked inside.
Dominic was rarely present during the day. He was out in the streets, conducting a merciless purge of the syndicate's ranks. The city was on high alert; news reports spoke of sudden shifts in the underworld, mysterious fires in Falcone-controlled warehouses, and high-ranking mob figures vanishing overnight.
Yet, every single night, without fail, Dominic returned to the penthouse.
He didn't return as the ruthless Don; he returned as a father trying to piece his broken life back together. He would sit by Leo's bedside until the boy fell asleep, holding his hand, whispering promises of safety.
On Monday night, after the children were fast asleep in their bedroom, I found Dominic sitting out on the private balcony. The night air was chilly, sweeping over the illuminated city buildings below. He held a glass of dark liquor, his collar unbuttoned, looking weary beyond measure.
I wrapped a warm wool cardigan around my shoulders and stepped out onto the glass-walled balcony. "You should get some rest, Dominic."
He didn't turn around, but his shoulders relaxed slightly at the sound of my voice. "Rest is a luxury I can't afford right now, Isabella."
I walked over to the railing, standing beside him, looking out at the city lights. "Leo is doing remarkably well, considering everything. He feels safe because of you."
Dominic took a slow sip of his drink, his gray eyes reflective. "He feels safe because of you. You took a bullet for them, Isabella. You killed a man to protect my son." He turned to face me, his gaze intense, piercing right through me. "I owe you my life. Everything I have... it's yours."
"I didn't do it for a reward, Dominic," I said softly, looking into his eyes. "I did it because I love those children. I love Leo."
Dominic stepped closer, closing the distance between us. His massive frame blocked out the cold night wind. He reached up, his thick, calloused fingers gently stroking my cheek, his touch surprisingly soft.
"And what about their father?" he whispered, his voice low, gravelly, and laced with undeniable tension. "How do you feel about him?"
My heart hammered wildly against my ribs. The air between us became electric, charged with weeks of unspoken desire, shared grief, and absolute trust.
"I think... their father is a man carrying too much pain," I whispered back, leaning slightly into his touch. "A man who deserves to be happy again."
Dominic leaned down, his lips hovering mere inches from mine. "Isabella..."
Before our lips could meet, the balcony door slid open with a sharp click.
Marco stood there, his arm still in a sling, holding a glowing tablet. "Don. We found the leak."
Dominic's posture instantly hardened, the tender moment shattering into cold reality. He stepped back from me, turning to his second-in-command. "Who?"
Marco looked up from the screen, his face grim. "It wasn't a guard. And it wasn't a driver."
He handed the tablet to Dominic.
Dominic scanned the digital files, financial transfers, and encrypted call logs displayed on the screen. As his eyes read the names, his face drained of all color, replacing his grief with an absolute, terrifying stillness.
"Sophia," Dominic whispered, his voice dangerously quiet.
My breath hitched. Sophia Moretti was Dominic's younger sister—a soft-spoken, elegant woman who managed the family's charitable foundations and frequently visited the estate.
"She accepted three million dollars from the Falcone family over the past six months," Marco reported grimly. "She gave them the perimeter security codes, the guard patrol schedules... and she was the one who confirmed Leo would be at the estate on Friday."
"My own sister," Dominic breathed, his hand crushing the crystal glass in his grip until the thick glass shattered, liquor and blood dripping onto the balcony floor. He didn't even flinch at the pain. "She sold out my wife... and she tried to sell out my son."
"Dominic! Your hand!" I cried out, reaching for his bleeding palm with a handkerchief.
May you like
He ignored the blood, looking at Marco with eyes that burned with absolute, unholy vengeance.
"Bring her to the docks," Dominic commanded, his voice a low, terrifying growl. "Tonight."
