Chapter 8 - Rebuilding the Ruins

Six months later.

The summer sun shone brightly over the newly restored Moretti estate. The damage from the attack had been completely repaired; the shattered glass replaced, the library refurbished with warm oak shelves, and the security systems upgraded to state-of-the-art standards.

However, the dark, oppressive atmosphere that had once hung over the estate was completely gone.

The heavy iron gates remained, but inside, the grounds were alive with sound and color.

Down in the rear garden, near the marble fountain, laughter echoed through the warm afternoon air.

Leo—now seven years old—was sprinting across the lush green lawn, wearing a bright blue soccer jersey, kicking a ball ahead of him. Beside him, Lily, wearing a matching yellow jersey, giggled hysterically as she chased after him, her golden curls bouncing in the sunlight.

"Pass it to me, Leo! Pass it!" Lily squealed.

Leo executed a surprisingly clean turn, kicking the soccer ball gently toward her feet. "Here you go, Lil! Score a goal!"

On the covered patio, I sat at a long wooden table, sipping iced tea. I wore a light floral sun dress, my hair tied back loosely. I was no longer wearing the black maid's uniform. I was no longer an employee.

Two warm, powerful hands rested gently on my shoulders from behind.

I leaned my head back, looking up into Dominic's face. He wore a simple white linen shirt and comfortable trousers. The cold, dangerous glint in his gray eyes was entirely replaced by a profound, radiant peace. The heavy lines of grief around his mouth had softened.

"Are they wearing themselves out?" Dominic asked, bending down to press a soft kiss against my temple.

"Not even close," I laughed softly, resting my hand over his on my shoulder. "They've been running for two hours."

Dominic stepped around the table, sitting beside me, his long legs stretching out. He took a sip of his own tea, watching the children play.

The Falcone family had been completely dismantled by federal authorities, thanks to the massive evidence package Dominic had turned over. Sophia was currently serving a thirty-year sentence in a maximum-security federal facility, entirely stripped of her wealth and influence. The syndicate had been reorganized into legitimate business enterprises under Dominic's firm leadership, clearing the dark shadows from our lives once and for all.

"I spoke with the lawyer this morning," Dominic said quietly, pulling a smooth, velvet-lined box from his pocket and placing it on the table between us.

My heart skipped a beat. I looked at the box, then up into his stormy gray eyes. "Oh?"

Dominic reached out, taking my hand in his. "The adoption papers for Lily are fully prepared. As soon as you sign, she is legally a Moretti. My daughter."

Tears of joy welled up in my eyes. "Dominic... she's going to be so happy."

"And there's one more document," he continued, his voice softening into that low, tender register he reserved only for me. He popped the velvet box open.

Inside rested a stunning, vintage diamond ring that caught the afternoon sunlight, sparkling brilliantly.

Dominic slid down from his chair, dropping to one knee right beside me on the stone patio.

"Isabella Carter," he said, holding my hand tightly, his eyes shining with emotion. "You brought light into a house that was drowning in darkness. You saved my son. You saved me. You taught us how to live, how to laugh, and how to love again. Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?"

I covered my mouth with my hand, tears spilling over my cheeks as I nodded frantically. "Yes! Yes, Dominic! A thousand times yes!"

He slid the ring onto my finger, standing up to pull me into a fierce, passionate embrace. He lifted me off my feet, spinning me around as his lips claimed mine in a deep, loving kiss.

"Look! Mommy and Daddy are kissing!" Lily yelled from the lawn, giggling loudly.

"Ew! Gross!" Leo shouted, though he was grinning from ear to ear, kicking the soccer ball high into the air.

Dominic set me down, laughing—a rich, deep, joyful sound that resonated across the entire estate. He put his arm around my waist, pulling me close against his side as the two children came running up the patio steps, throwing themselves into our arms.

We stood there together under the summer sun—a broken maid, a feared mob boss, and two traumatized children who had found their way through the dark. We were no longer bound by fear, grief, or secrets.

We were a family. Whole, unbroken, and finally home.
