Chapter 7 - The Reckoning

The rain beat down relentlessly against the metal roof of the abandoned shipping warehouse at the Boston harbor. The dark ocean water crashed violently against the wooden pylons below, mirroring the storm raging inside Dominic Moretti's chest.

I wasn't supposed to be there. Dominic had ordered me to stay at the penthouse with the children under heavy guard. But as he had walked out the door with a gun tucked into his belt, I saw the darkness threatening to consume his soul entirely. I knew that if he crossed the ultimate line—if he murdered his own sister in cold blood—the monster would win, and the father Leo had just regained would be lost forever.

I had convinced Marco to bring me along, arguing that Dominic needed a voice of sanity before he committed an act that would haunt him for the rest of his life.

Inside the dimly lit warehouse, Sophia Moretti was tied to a wooden chair beneath a single hanging bulb. Her elegant clothes were dirtied, her hair disheveled, her makeup smeared with tears.

Dominic stood over her, his dark trench coat soaked with rain, a heavy pistol held at his side. Two guards stood in the shadows, their weapons drawn.

"Why, Sophia?" Dominic roared, his voice echoing off the corrugated metal walls. "Why?! Elena was your sister-in-law! Leo is your nephew! Your own blood!"

Sophia sobbed hysterically, shaking her head. "You took everything, Dominic!" she shrieked, her voice echoing with bitter resentment. "Father left the entire empire to you! The money, the status, the power! I got nothing! Just petty charity foundations!"

"I gave you millions!" Dominic yelled back, stepping forward, his jaw tight. "I protected you!"

"Falcone promised me half the territory if I helped them clear the board!" Sophia cried out, her eyes gleaming with desperate madness. "Elena was just collateral! And the boy... the boy saw the hitman! He had to be silenced before he spoke!"

Dominic's eyes flared with pure, lethal fury. He raised the gun, pressing the cold steel barrel directly against his sister's forehead. His hand was steady, his knuckles white.

"Say goodbye, Sophia," he growled.

"Dominic! STOP!"

My voice shattered the heavy tension in the warehouse. I stepped out of the shadows, walking quickly across the wet concrete floor toward them.

Dominic didn't lower the gun, but his eyes cut sideways toward me, full of rage. "Isabella?! What are you doing here?! I told you to stay with the kids!"

"Look at me, Dominic!" I demanded, stepping directly into his line of sight, placing myself between his gun and his sister. "Look at me!"

"Move, Isabella," he warned, his voice dangerous. "She tried to kill my son. She signed Elena's death warrant. She dies tonight."

"If you shoot her, she wins!" I shouted back, tears streaming down my face as the rain dripped from the warehouse roof. "She wants to destroy this family! If you execute your own sister in cold blood, you become the monster she thinks you are! You ruin the future Leo is finally building!"

"She tried to murder Leo!" Dominic screamed, his chest heaving violently.

"And Leo needs his father!" I yelled back, stepping even closer, placing my hands directly onto the heavy gun in his grip, forcing the barrel down toward the floor. "Leo needs a father who chooses justice over vengeance! Don't let her take your soul, Dominic! Please!"

Dominic stared down at me, his gray eyes wild, torn between the ruthless Don who demanded blood and the grieving father who loved his son. His breath came in heavy, ragged hitches. The warehouse fell dead silent, save for the patter of the rain and Sophia's terrified whimpers.

Slowly, agonizingly, the tension in his hands gave way. He lowered the weapon.

"Marco," Dominic rasped out, his voice broken.

"Don?"

"Take her," Dominic ordered, turning his back on his weeping sister. "Hand her over to the federal authorities. Give them the complete paper trail of Falcone's operations, her offshore accounts, and the car bomb evidence. Let her rot in a federal prison for the rest of her miserable life."

Sophia gasped. "No! Dominic, please! Not federal prison! They'll tear me apart!"

"Take her out of my sight," Dominic commanded coldly, without looking back.

Marco and the guards untied Sophia, dragging her out of the warehouse into the pouring rain.

Dominic stood alone in the center of the vast space. The heavy pistol slipped from his fingers, clattering onto the concrete floor. He dropped to his knees, burying his face in his blood-stained hands, his broad shoulders shaking with silent, agonizing sobs.

I knelt beside him on the cold, wet floor, wrapping my arms tightly around his massive chest, pulling his head against my shoulder.

"I've got you," I whispered, holding him tight as the rain fell around us. "I've got you, Dominic."

And there, in the dark warehouse by the ocean, the feared Don of Boston finally let go of the past, weeping into the arms of the woman who had saved his family.
