Chapter 15 - Shadows Fading

As we stepped out of the federal courthouse and back into the brilliant Chicago sunshine, the cool spring breeze felt like a physical blessing. The heavy, suffocating weight that had pressed down upon my chest for months had completely dissolved, leaving behind a profound, crystalline sense of peace.
Julian Vance walked with us down the wide stone steps, smiling warmly as he slipped his leather portfolio beneath his arm. "Well, Mrs. Hayes, I believe we can officially close your file. Dana stretched her arms above her head, letting out a long, satisfied sigh of relief. "Well, since our schedule is officially clear of lawyers, judges, and federal marshals, I propose we celebrate properly. Ice cream for lunch, followed by a trip to the zoo for Ava after school."
I laughed, feeling a genuine, lighthearted joy that I hadn't experienced in years. "Ice cream for lunch sounds like an exceptional parenting decision, Aunt Dana. Let's go."

The towering skyscrapers, the shimmering lake, and the lively crowds no longer felt like a threatening labyrinth; they felt like home. The nightmare of Marcus Hayes and his toxic world was over. We had survived the fire, and out of the ashes, we had built something unbreakable.
