Chapter 6 - The Legal Counter-Punch

The conference room of *Sterling, Vance & Cole* smelled excessively of expensive leather, aged mahogany, and old money. Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, the Chicago skyline stretched out beneath a heavy, gray morning drizzle, mirroring the heavy cloud hanging over our lives.
Seated across the gleaming walnut table was Marcus’s new legal counsel—a high-priced family law shark named Harrison Vance, who wore a bespoke navy suit and a smile that looked like it had been surgically stapled to his face. Marcus sat beside him, looking significantly more composed than he had in the lobby the night before, though his eyes darted nervously toward Dana, who was sitting directly behind me with her arms crossed, chewing on another piece of cinnamon gum like she was waiting for a bell to ring in the third round.
"Well, Mrs. Hayes," Harrison began, his voice dripping with condescending paternalism. "My client is willing to be exceptionally generous today. We recognize that emotions ran high over the weekend, and naturally, accidents happen in blended households. Mr. Hayes is prepared to offer a joint custody modification—provided you drop all criminal charges against Ms. Vance and agree to a mandatory gag order regarding the incident."
I stared at him across the table, feeling a cold, calm fury settle deep into my bones. "You want me to drop felony assault charges and sweep child abuse under the rug so Marcus can protect his country club reputation?"
Harrison chuckled smoothly, adjusting his gold-rimmed cufflinks. "Let's call it what it is, Mrs. Hayes—a practical resolution. Litigation is messy, expensive, and frankly, public trials are terribly unkind to working mothers who leave their five-year-old children in the care of third parties while they grind away at mid-level corporate jobs."
Before I could open my mouth to unleash the entire vocabulary of profanity Dana had taught me over the years, the heavy oak door of the conference room clicked open.
My attorney, Julian Vance—no relation to the shark across the table, thankfully—strode into the room carrying a thick leather briefcase. Julian was a legendary bulldog of a lawyer who specialized in high-conflict custody litigation, known across Cook County for chewing up arrogant corporate counsels and spitting them out in federal court.
"Good morning, gentlemen," Julian said smoothly, taking the empty chair beside me and dropping a thick stack of certified documents onto the walnut table with a sharp smack.
Harrison raised an eyebrow. "Julian. I trust you've reviewed our settlement offer?"
"I have, Harrison," Julian smiled, a terrifying, predatory grin that didn't reach his eyes. "And in response, my client and I have prepared a little counter-proposal."
Julian slid three separate folders across the table.
Marcus frowned, picking up the top document. "What is this?"
"That, Mr. Hayes, is an expedited emergency petition for immediate termination of all parental rights, backed by certified medical forensic reports from County General Hospital, sworn statements from responding police officers, and dashcam footage from the responding cruisers showing your girlfriend physically resisting arrest while screaming obscenities at a five-year-old child," Julian recited casually, flipping open his own pen.
Harrison’s smile faltered slightly. He snatched the second folder, skimming the pages before his eyes widened. " CPS findings? They condemned the residence's safety compliance?"
"Oh, it gets better," Julian said, leaning back in his leather chair and lacing his fingers together. "Folder number three contains financial audit records subpoenaed from Marcus’s corporate accounts over the past twenty-four hours. It turns out that while Marcus was claiming financial hardship during our last custody mediation, he was secretly funneling over fifty thousand dollars in joint marital assets into offshore accounts to fund Ms. Vance's boutique lifestyle and luxury vehicles."
Marcus turned bolt upright, his face turning an alarming shade of crimson. "You had no right to audit my accounts! That's a gross violation of privacy!"
"It's called discovery, Marcus," Dana piped up from the back of the room, her voice dripping with delicious sarcasm. "Turns out when you assault a kid, judges lose all patience for your financial gymnastics."

Harrison slammed the folders shut, glaring furiously across the table at Marcus before turning back to Julian. "This... this is completely irregular! We will fight this tooth and nail in front of a judge!"
"Please do," Julian smiled warmly, standing up and buttoning his jacket. "Judge Whitaker is presiding over our docket this afternoon. She has three daughters, a zero-tolerance policy for child abuse, and a particular disdain for corporate executives who hide assets. Shall I tell her you're looking forward to explaining why a hockey stick was applied to a five-year-old's collarbone?"
