Chapter 16 - The First Graduation

Two months later, the academic year culminated in the sweet, innocent milestone of Ava’s kindergarten graduation ceremony. The school gymnasium was decorated with bright yellow paper streamers, colorful balloons, and a large banner that read *Congratulations, Class of Kindergarten!*proudly displayed across the stage.
When the small children marched into the gymnasium wearing miniature caps and blue gowns, the room erupted into a deafening chorus of cheers, applause, and camera flashes from proud parents. Dana and I sat in the front row, our video cameras and phones poised to capture every single second.
Ava spotted us immediately from the line of marching children. Her face broke into a radiant, gap-toothed smile, and she gave us an enthusiastic, exaggerated wave that caused her oversized mortarboard cap to slip slightly over one eye. We waved back frantically, tears of unadulterated joy pricking at the corners of my eyes.
As the children received their symbolic diplomas one by one, the teacher announced their names and future aspirations over the microphone.
"Ava Hayes! When Ava grows up, she wants to be a professional pianist and a fierce defender of justice, just like her mom and aunt!"
The gymnasium erupted into warm, enthusiastic applause as Ava proudly walked across the stage, accepted her colorful certificate of completion, and gave a little curtsy that melted every heart in the room. When she trotted back down the steps and leaped into our arms at the edge of the seating area, we both squeezed her tight, burying our faces in her soft brown hair.
"We are so proud of you, my sweet girl," I whispered, kissing her forehead.
"I told you I'd do a good job, Mommy," Ava beamed, clutching her diploma tightly against her pink unicorn backpack. "Can we celebrate with pancakes now?"
May you like
"Pancakes, ice cream, and anything else your heart desires," Dana laughed, scooping Ava up onto her shoulders as we headed out into the bright summer afternoon.
