Chapter 18 - A New Horizon

By late August, the possibility of a permanent new chapter in our lives began to take tangible shape. With my career at the corporate consulting firm continuing to flourish and Dana’s community self-defense academy expanding into a highly successful multi-location enterprise, we decided it was time to move out of our temporary downtown apartment and into a permanent, sunlit home of our own.

We found a charming, craftsman-style house nestled in a quiet, tree-lined neighborhood on the outskirts of the city. It featured a sprawling backyard surrounded by a white picket fence, a bright yellow front door, and a spacious sunroom that was practically custom-built for Ava’s grand piano.

Moving day was a joyous, exhausting whirlwind of cardboard boxes, bubble wrap, and delivery trucks. Dana, utilizing her formidable physical strength, easily hoisted massive sofas and heavy bookshelves with effortless grace, while Ava gleefully decorated her new bedroom with pink fairy lights and unicorn posters.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the Chicago sky in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and rose, I stood on the wide wooden front porch, taking a deep breath of the fresh, fragrant evening air. The oppressive shadows of the past had been completely swept away, replaced by the warm, inviting glow of our new life.

Dana stepped out onto the porch carrying two cold glasses of lemonade, handing one to me before leaning against the wooden railing.

"Well, sis," Dana said, looking out over the quiet, peaceful street where children laughed in the distance. "I'd say we built ourselves a pretty solid fortress."

"It's not a fortress, Dana," I smiled, wrapping my arm around her shoulders as the sound of Ava practicing a cheerful melody drifted out from the open living room window. "It's a home."
