Chapter 2 - The Midnight Denial

Kenneth Brennan loved his brandy. Every night at precisely eleven o'clock, he poured himself two fingers of Kentucky straight bourbon into a heavy crystal tumbler, walked out to his newly remodeled kitchen, and admired his domain. Tonight, the marble countertops gleamed under the recessed lighting. The Viking stove hummed softly. The stainless steel refrigerator was stocked with imported meats and artisan cheeses.

Kenneth took a slow sip, a self-satisfied smirk playing on his lips. Things were finally going his way. For a few years there, right after the lumber yard downsized and his back went out, he’d worried they might actually lose the house. He’d worried he’d have to swallow his pride and ask Tyler—or God forbid, quiet little Lucia—for help. But providence had stepped in. A mysterious trust fund, managed by some invisible hand in Texas, had stabilized everything. Kenneth took that as proof of his own enduring value. A righteous man always finds a way.

He walked over to the kitchen island, picked up his iPad, and tapped the screen to check his Amazon cart. He’d had his eye on a set of high-end golf clubs—fully custom-fitted, carbon-shafted beauties that cost nearly four grand.

He tapped *Proceed to Checkout*.

The screen blinked, loading for a fraction of a second longer than usual. Then, a sharp red banner slammed down across the top of the display.

*Payment Declined. Please update your payment method.*

Kenneth frowned, his thick white eyebrows knitting together. He adjusted his reading glasses and tapped the screen again. *Declined.*

"Joanne!" he barked, his voice carrying down the quiet hallway. "Joanne, get in here for a second."

A minute later, Joanne shuffled into the kitchen wearing her flannel bathrobe, rubbing sleep from her eyes. "Kenneth? What on earth is it? It's past midnight."

"My card. The black card from the Brennan Family account. Look at this." He shoved the iPad toward her. "It says declined. The idiots at the bank must have flagged a late-night transaction. Try yours. Try to buy that sweater you were looking at."

Joanne blinked, confused, and hurried to grab her phone from the charging dock. She opened her retail app, navigated to her cart, and hit purchase on a cashmere cardigan.

A red pop-up immediately filled her screen: *Transaction Refused. Insufficient Funds.*

The kitchen grew deathly quiet. The hum of the refrigerator suddenly sounded deafening.

"That's impossible," Joanne whispered, her face draining of color. "There's always money. The monthly deposit... it always clears on the first of the month."

"Well, it didn't clear!" Kenneth’s face flushed a dangerous shade of crimson. He tapped the banking app, trying to log into the main trust portal. The login screen spun for ten seconds before a stark, unyielding error message appeared: *Account Closed / Invalid Credentials.*

Kenneth’s hand shook, the ice cubes clinking violently against the crystal glass. "Closed? What do you mean, *closed*?"

Before Joanne could answer, her phone buzzed in her hand. It was a text message notification. She unlocked it, her eyes scanning the bank alert.

*Alert: Your automatic withdrawal for the Cadillac lease has failed due to insufficient funds. A $45 overdraft fee has been applied.*

A second text buzzed. Then a third. Tyler’s boat insurance. The property tax installment.

Kenneth stared at his wife, the realization slowly dawning behind his stubborn eyes, though his pride refused to let him speak the name that was hovering in the air between them.
