Chapter 4 - The Austin Return

Back in Austin, Texas, the warm December sun was a welcome relief from the bitter Indiana freeze. Meridian AI’s corporate headquarters occupied the top two floors of a sleek glass-and-steel tower overlooking Lady Bird Lake. Inside the executive suite, the atmosphere was a whirlwind of high-stakes tech energy and absolute focus.
Lucia sat at her glass desk, reviewing the final year-end metrics with Cameron, her co-founder and chief operating officer.
Cameron tossed a printed report onto the desk and grinned. "Well, boss, our enterprise retention rate is up eighteen percent, and the Seattle expansion is officially ahead of schedule. At this rate, we're looking at an acquisition offer or an IPO prep by next quarter. You're officially a tech titan."
Lucia offered a small, tired smile, rubbing her temples. "An exhausted tech titan, maybe. How’s Ellie?"
"She's fine," Cameron said, her expression softening. "She’s down in the campus daycare drawing pictures of dinosaurs with the marketing team’s golden retriever. Honestly, she handled the Indiana disaster way better than you did. What made you finally pull the plug?"
Lucia leaned back in her ergonomic chair, staring out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the skyline. "I realized something yesterday. For years, I kept sending that money because I wanted them to be comfortable. I wanted to prove to my father that I didn't need his approval, that I could succeed even if he thought I was a failure. But all it did was feed their entitlement. The moment Ellie spilled a glass of water, he treated her like garbage. He didn't see a daughter or a granddaughter. He saw an interruption."
Cameron nodded slowly, crossing her arms. "So what’s the game plan? Do you think they’ll figure it out?"
"They already have," Lucia said calmly. "My mother tried calling my cell three times this morning. Tyler sent a text asking if we could 'talk about family.' They’re panicking because their credit cards are maxed out, the boat payments are due, and for the first time in their lives, they actually have to face the consequences of their own actions."
"Good," Cameron said firmly. "Let them sweat. You built this empire with your own two hands, while eating instant ramen and coding until your fingers bled. They don't deserve a single cent of it."
Just as Cameron finished speaking, the internal intercom on Lucia’s desk chimed softly.
The receptionist’s voice came through, sounding slightly strained. "Lucia? I’m sorry to interrupt, but there are... three people in the lobby downstairs insisting on seeing you immediately. They didn't have appointments. They say they're your family from Indiana."
Lucia exchanged a look with Cameron. A slow, knowing smile touched the corners of her mouth.
"Send them up," Lucia said. "Let's see how well they do without a safety net."
