Chapter 5 - Facing the Empire

The elevator doors opened with a soft chime on the thirtieth floor, and Kenneth, Joanne, and Tyler stepped out into the ultra-modern, minimalist lobby of Meridian AI.

They looked completely out of place. Kenneth’s expensive winter coat was unzipped, his tie slightly crooked, his face flushed with a mixture of desperate panic and burning pride. Joanne looked like she was about to burst into tears, nervously clutching her designer handbag—a bag that was likely about to be repossessed. Tyler stood behind them, his hands jammed into his pockets, trying to maintain a tough posture that completely failed under the weight of the sprawling, million-dollar office around them.

The receptionist looked up from her polished quartz desk. "Mr. Brennan? Your daughter is expecting you in Conference Room A. Right this way."

They walked down the sunlit corridor, passing walls of glass that revealed teams of brilliant engineers and data scientists working on multi-million-dollar AI contracts. Every step felt like walking through a museum dedicated to everything Kenneth had told Lucia she would never achieve.

When they pushed open the heavy glass door of Conference Room A, Lucia was standing by the window, looking out over the Austin skyline with her arms crossed. She didn't turn around immediately, letting the suffocating silence stretch out between them.

"Lucia," Joanne finally choked out, her voice trembling. "Oh, thank God. Thank goodness we found you."

Kenneth cleared his throat, stepping forward, trying desperately to put on his old patriarchal authority, though his voice cracked slightly. "Lucia. What is the meaning of this? Your mother and I woke up to find our accounts frozen. The bank tells us the trust has been dissolved. Do you have any idea what kind of mess this is causing back home?"

Lucia finally turned around. Her expression was completely devoid of emotion—no anger, no bitterness, just a chilling, professional calm.

"Yes, Dad," Lucia said, her voice steady and clear. "I do know. Because I’m the one who dissolved it."

Kenneth recoiled as if he had been slapped. "You? You cut off your own family? After everything we did for you?"

A dark, incredulous laugh slipped past Lucia’s lips. "Everything you did for me? You told me I was a failure, Dad. You told me my hands needed 'real skills' while I built a multi-million-dollar tech infrastructure out of a secondhand laptop. You kicked me out of your house on Christmas Day because a five-year-old spilled a glass of water on a tablecloth."

"That was a misunderstanding!" Tyler barked, stepping into the room. "Look, Lu, we were stressed out, okay? Dad's back has been bad. The store hasn't been doing well. You can't just cut us off like this! We're family!"

"Family," Lucia repeated, stepping closer to the glass table. "For two and a half years, I sent you eight thousand dollars a month. No notes. No demands. I gave you comfort, safety, and luxury, hoping that maybe, just once, someone in this room would ask where it came from. Someone would show a shred of humility or curiosity. But you didn't. You just spent it, flaunted it, and treated me and my daughter like dirt."

Kenneth’s face turned a dangerous shade of purple. He pointed a shaking finger at her, his ego refusing to die even here, in the heart of her empire. "I raised you! I put a roof over your head! You owe me respect, and you owe us financial security! You can't just throw us out like trash!"

Lucia walked right up to her father, looking him dead in the eye. For the first time in her life, she was taller, stronger, and infinitely more powerful than the man who had tried to shrink her spirit.

"I don't owe you a damn thing," Lucia said softly. "The free ride is over. If you want to keep your house, your boat, and your cars, you can figure out how to earn them yourself—just like I did."

She turned her back on them, walking toward the glass door.

"Security," Lucia said calmly into her lapel mic. "Please escort our guests out of the building."

As two security guards stepped into the room, Kenneth stood frozen, staring at his daughter in utter, terrifying defeat. The empire he had looked down upon had just locked its gates, leaving him standing outside in the cold.
