Chapter 3 - The Morning Aftermath

The sun rose over Hartwell, Indiana, casting a pale, freezing light across the snow-covered rooftops of Maple Street. Inside the Brennan house, however, there was no warmth.

Tyler Brennan slammed his fist against the kitchen island so hard the espresso mugs rattled in their saucers.

"What do you mean, the boat insurance bounced?" Tyler yelled, his voice echoing off the expensive marble tiles. "I’m supposed to take Brooke out to the lake club next week! My credit card was declined at breakfast when I tried to pay for gas, and now the marina is calling my phone like I'm some kind of deadbeat!"

"Calm down, Tyler," Joanne said, wringing her hands so tightly her knuckles were white. She looked frantically across the room toward Kenneth, who sat at the head of the table in dead silence, staring down at a cold cup of black coffee.

Kenneth hadn't spoken a word since 3 AM. He had spent the remaining hours of the night calling every automated customer service line he could find, only to be met with cold, robotic voices informing him that the primary trust account associated with his Social Security number had been permanently terminated by the primary holder.

The primary holder.

The words echoed in Kenneth’s mind. For years, he had assumed the money was an anonymous grant, a belated reward for his decades of hard work, or perhaps a secret government subsidy for local patriarchs. But as the panic set in, his stubborn brain finally began to process the brutal, undeniable timeline.

The funds had started arriving right around the time Lucia’s little tech company in Austin had started making headlines in regional business journals. Back then, Kenneth had scoffed, calling her little startup a glorified hobby.

"It was her," Joanne whispered, voicing the terrifying thought they were all trying to suppress. She looked at Kenneth with wide, accusing eyes. "Kenneth... it was Lucia. All along. It was Lucia's money."

"Don't be ridiculous!" Kenneth roared, slamming his heavy mug onto the wood. The coffee sloshed over the rim, staining the pristine white tablecloth—ironically, the very same Portugal linen he had yelled about the night before. "Lucia works out of a rented computer shack in Texas! She’s a programmer, for Christ's sake! She doesn't have millions of dollars! She’s barely keeping her head above water!"

"Is she?" a calm, cold voice interrupted from the doorway.

Tyler and Joanne spun around. Brooke, Tyler’s girlfriend, stood leaning against the archway, holding her smartphone out in front of her like it was a live grenade. She had her thumb scrolling rapidly through a financial news portal.

"I was just looking up her company," Brooke said, her voice dripping with a mixture of awe and disbelief. "Meridian AI. I thought she was just some nerd writing code. But look at this article from *Forbes* published three months ago. They just completed a Series C funding round. The company valuation is currently estimated at seventy-one million dollars."

The kitchen fell into a stunned, suffocating silence.

Seventy-one million dollars.

Tyler swallowed hard, his tough-guy facade instantly crumbling. "Seventy-one... million? Our Lucia?"

Kenneth stood up so fast his chair tipped backward onto the floor, crashing against the marble. His face was purple, his chest heaving as the sheer humiliation of his own arrogance collided with the cold, hard reality of his financial ruin.

"Get my coat," Kenneth snarled, his voice trembling with rage. "We are going to that hotel."
