Chapter 11 - The Fake Scandal

On Monday morning, the headline hit the internet like a coordinated bomb:

*EXCLUSIONARY EVIDENCE: LATE INDUSTRIALIST ARTHUR VANCE LINKED TO MULTI-MILLION-DOLLAR SWISS TAX SHELTERS, CLAIMS IMPRISONED SON-IN-LAW.*

Tabloid websites and financial blogs pounced on the leak. Accompanying the articles were scanned documents purportedly showing Arthur Vance’s signature authorizing illegal wire transfers to undisclosed accounts in Zurich, dating back ten years.

Social media swarmed with speculation. Critics who had celebrated Garrett’s arrest suddenly turned their skepticism toward me: *Was the wife innocent? Was the entire Vance fortune built on dirty money?*

I was sitting in my father’s former office at Vance Holdings when the storm broke.

Marcus rushed in, his tablet already streaming cable news commentary. "Claire, this is a forged smear campaign. We can prove the metadata on those PDFs was created three months ago on Garrett’s home laptop, but the court of public opinion moves faster than the legal system. The board is getting nervous."

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the Manhattan skyline.

I remembered my father sitting in this very chair, teaching me about integrity. *"Claire,"* he had said when I was twenty, *"your name is the only thing they can’t take from you unless you give it away. Defend it with everything you have."*

"They want a public war, Marcus?" I said, turning around. My voice was calm, ice-cold, and lethal. "Let's give them one."

"What do you want to do?"

"Call a national press conference for 3:00 PM today in the lobby of Vance Tower," I instructed. "Invite every major financial network, every legal reporter, and every tabloid journalist who ran Garrett’s fabricated leak."

"And what will we show them?" Marcus asked.

I smiled—a sharp, uncompromising expression that would have made my father proud. "We’re going to show them the unedited restaurant footage, the forensic metadata proving Garrett forged my father’s signature posthumously, and then... we’re going to introduce our special guest."

Marcus stared at me. "Special guest?"

May you like

"Chloe Montgomery arrived in New York two hours ago," I said calmly. "And she is very eager to avoid twenty years in federal prison."
