Chapter 17 - Day in Court

The trial of *The United States v. Garrett Sterling and Vivian Sterling* began on a crisp, bright morning in late November.
The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity. Observers, law students, and national media filled every bench.
Garrett sat at the defense table, his arrogance completely shattered. He had lost twenty pounds in Rikers Island; his skin was sallow, his designer suit hung loosely on his shrinking frame, and his eyes darted nervously around the room, unable to settle on anyone.
Vivian sat beside him, wearing a plain gray prison-issue cardigan, her once-immaculate hair now streaked with gray, her chin tucked into her chest in humiliation.
I took the witness stand on the third day of the trial.
I was sworn in under an oath of truth, looking directly at the jury. For three hours, Assistant U.S. Attorney Chen walked me through every detail: the five years of psychological manipulation, the discovery of the forged checks, the systematic drain of Vance Logistics, the second passport, and finally, the dinner at L’Aura.
When Chen asked me to describe the assault, the courtroom was so quiet you could hear the scratch of the court reporter's machine.
"Garrett told me that if I didn't pay the eight-thousand-dollar bill, our marriage was over," I testified clearly. "And when I refused to continue funding my own abuse, he threw the wine in my face to humiliate me into submission."
Garrett’s new defense attorney, a sharp, aggressive litigator named Cross, stood up for cross-examination.
"Mrs. Sterling—or should I say, Ms. Vance," Cross sneered, leaning against the podium. "Isn't it true that you deliberately provoked my client? Isn't it true that you orchestrated this entire confrontation to fabricate a pretext for a lucrative divorce?"
I didn't blink. I didn't get angry.
"Mr. Cross," I replied, my voice steady and crystalline. "Your client forged my signature thirty-six times to steal four million dollars. He leased a penthouse in Miami for another woman using my father's company funds. He carried a fake passport under the name Gabriel Vance. Did I orchestrate that too?"
Cross’s jaw tightened. He glanced back at Garrett, whose head was buried in his hands.

"No further questions," Cross muttered, sinking back into his chair.
