Chapter 12 - Turning the Tables

By 2:45 PM, the lobby of Vance Tower was an ocean of television cameras, boom microphones, and restless reporters.

At precisely 3:00 PM, I stepped up to the podium.

I didn't hide behind a spokesperson. I didn't issue a generic written statement. I stood under the bright glare of the television lights, dressed in black, projecting an aura of absolute, unshakable authority.

"Good afternoon," I began, my voice ringing clearly through the microphone. "Over the past twelve hours, certain media outlets have published fabricated documents claiming my late father, Arthur Vance, engaged in financial misconduct. These allegations were manufactured by my estranged husband, Garrett Sterling, from his holding cell at Rikers Island."

I tapped the remote control in my hand.

A massive LED screen behind me illuminated.

First, the unedited surveillance video from L’Aura played. The clear, crisp footage captured Garrett’s snarling face, his demand for me to pay, his wine splash, and my calm 911 call. The audio was crystal clear. The room of journalists fell completely silent.

"Garrett Sterling believed that humiliation was a weapon he could use to silence me," I continued. "When physical and emotional abuse failed, he turned to financial extortion."

I clicked the remote again.

The screen split into two columns: on the left, the document Garrett had leaked to the press; on the right, the digital forensic audit conducted by certified digital analysts.

"The document Garrett leaked claims to have been signed by Arthur Vance on June 12, 2012," I explained, pointing to the screen. "However, the digital metadata embedded within the file shows it was generated on October 3rd of this year, using a counterfeit signature font created on Garrett Sterling’s personal computer."

Gasps rippled through the press corps. Cameras snapped rapidly.

"Garrett and his mother, Vivian Sterling, did not simply commit domestic assault," I announced. "They executed a five-year conspiracy of grand larceny, corporate embezzlement, and identity theft."

I paused, looking directly into the main network cameras.
