Chapter 2 - Cold Porcelain and Flashing Lights

The glass slipped from Garrett’s grasp, shattering against the parquet floor with a sharp, violent crack. Shards bounced against his bespoke leather shoes, but he didn't look down. His face transformed from smug entitlement to sheer, bewildered rage in a fraction of a second.

"What is the meaning of this?" Vivian shrieked, shooting up from her chair with an agility that defied her years. Her hand remained clutched to her pearls, her chin jutted forward in practiced indignation. "Do you know who we are? My son is Garrett Sterling! This is an outrage—this is a private family dispute! Claire, tell these men to leave this instant!"

Detective Miller didn’t even glance at her. He moved with the quiet, practiced efficiency of a man who had arrested far more dangerous people than a spoiled trust-fund vulture. "Sir, I won't ask a second time. Step away from your wife and put your hands where we can see them."

"She’s insane!" Garrett shouted, backing into his chair and sending it scraping across the wood. He pointed a shaking finger at me. "She threw the wine herself! She’s hysterical! She refused to settle our tab and started throwing things—officer, look at her!"

The manager of L’Aura, a tall Frenchman named Henri whom Garrett had spent the last two hours demeaning over the temperature of the butter, stepped forward smoothly. He tapped a small tablet in his hands.

"The dining room is equipped with four high-definition optical lenses with directional audio, Monsieur Sterling," Henri said, his voice entirely devoid of warmth. "The feed has already been uploaded to the precinct's secure server. We watched you strike Madame Vance with a full glass of our 2015 Château Margaux."

Garrett's mouth opened, then snapped shut like a dying fish.

The two uniformed officers closed the distance. One seized Garrett’s right arm, twisting it behind his back with practiced leverage. The click of the steel handcuffs echoed through the cavernous dining room with finality.

"You're making a mistake! Claire! Tell them!" Garrett bucked against the grip, his face flushing crimson to match the wine staining my collar. "You spineless bitch! You set me up!"

"Quiet," the second officer barked, tightening the ratchet.

Vivian rushed toward them, her manicured fingers clawing at the officer's wool sleeve. "Get your filthy hands off my son! We have attorneys! We will have your badges by midnight! Claire Vance, you ungrateful orphan, after everything this family did to elevate you—"

"Mrs. Sterling," Detective Miller interrupted, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy monotone as he unfolded a document stamped with a red state seal. "If you touch my officer again, you will be joining your son under charges of felony obstruction. Furthermore, this warrant isn’t merely for misdemeanor assault."

He held the document open before Garrett’s bulging eyes.

"Garrett Sterling, you are under arrest for aggravated assault, identity theft, and grand larceny exceeding four point two million dollars. As of forty-five minutes ago, the Southern District of New York froze accounts held under Sterling Global Logistics and Vance Heritage Trust."

The room went completely airless.

Vivian froze, her mouth caught in a grotesque oval. The arrogance melted from her features, replaced by the sheer, unadulterated terror of a parasite realizing the host has taken antibiotics.

I stood up slowly from my chair, smoothed down my ruined silk blouse, and picked up my bag. I didn't look like an abused victim cowering in the corner. I looked like Arthur Vance’s daughter.

"The bill is unpaid, Garrett," I whispered, stepping close enough that he could see his own terrified reflection in the pupils of my eyes. "And for the first time in five years, you’re going to pay every single cent yourself."
