Chapter 11 - THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF CALDWELL

The heavy oak doors of the Caldwell estate groaned as federal agents poured into the grand library, their heavy boots striking the imported Persian rugs with a rhythmic, unyielding finality. Beatrice remained on her knees, her manicured fingers clawing desperately at the hem of my wool coat as the flashing red and blue lights from the cruisers outside painted the room in an erratic, apocalyptic glow.
"Evelyn, please!" Beatrice shrieked, her voice cracking into a pathetic, guttural whine that bore no resemblance to the imperious matriarch who had terrorized high society for decades. "You can't do this to us! We are blood! We are the Caldwells!"
Assistant U.S. Attorney Miller stepped past Marcus, his expression carved from granite. He didn't even spare the weeping woman on the floor a glance before nodding to the two agents behind him. "Beatrice Caldwell, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit industrial espionage, securities fraud, and obstruction of justice. You have the right to remain silent..."
The cold click of stainless-steel handcuffs snapping around Beatrice’s wrists was the sweetest music I had ever heard. The woman who had treated me like a stray dog for four agonizing years was hoisted to her feet, her expensive silk blouse rumpled, her face streaked with mascara and self-pity. As they dragged her toward the double doors, she threw one last, venomous glare over her shoulder at me—a look of pure, unadulterated hatred that confirmed every single suspicion I had ever harbored about her.
"You'll rot for this, Evelyn!" she screamed as they hauled her out into the crisp evening air. "Ethan will destroy you! He’s smarter than all of you combined!"
Marcus stepped closer to me, his broad shoulder brushing mine as we watched the taillights of the federal vans disappear down the long gravel driveway. "She's losing her mind," he murmured, his voice low and steady. "Ethan is sitting in a holding cell five miles away, completely unaware that his mother is joining him in federal custody. His defense attorney just quit because his retainer bounced."

"Good," I replied, smoothing the front of my coat. "Let them share a cell. They deserve each other."
