Chapter 16 - THE ASHES OF THE DYNASTY

The demolition permits for the Caldwell estate had been approved with record speed, thanks to a city council that suddenly realized associating with convicted felons was bad for their political careers. I stood on the manicured lawn, watching a massive yellow wrecking ball swing through the second-floor master bedroom—the exact room where Ethan used to mock my tears and throw my sketchbooks into the fireplace.

*Crash.*

The exterior wall buckled, sending a massive cloud of dust, plaster, and shattered mahogany cascading into the courtyard.

Marcus handed me a hard hat, though I was standing safely behind the yellow caution tape. "The historical society tried to block it," he noted casually, sipping from a paper cup of coffee. "They claimed the Caldwell Manor was a landmark of Manhattan's Gilded Age aristocracy."

"Let them cry about it," I replied, watching a crane tear down the wrought-iron gates bearing the Caldwell family crest. "Gilded cages are meant to be smashed. What's left of Beatrice's assets?"

"After the federal forfeiture laws and civil suits, she's broke," Marcus replied, checking his tablet. "Her accounts have been completely drained to pay back the investors she defrauded. She's currently sharing a holding cell block with common embezzlers down at Rikers. Her high-society friends won't even answer her attorney's phone calls."

"Poetic justice," I murmured.

My phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out and saw an encrypted email notification from Harrison Vance. I tapped it open, scanning the attachment: the finalized, expedited divorce decree, signed by Judge Thomas himself, granting me full custody of my assets, full ownership of Aegis Global, and a permanent restraining order against both Ethan and Beatrice Caldwell.

I felt a profound, overwhelming sense of lightness wash over me. The invisible chains that had dragged me down for years were finally shattered into dust. I wasn't surviving anymore. I was conquering.

"What's next, boss?" Marcus asked, looking at me with a mixture of professional respect and genuine admiration. "We have a massive tech summit in London next month. The European markets are begging to license Project Aegis."

I looked one last time as the wrecking ball smashed through the grand foyer, reducing the monument of my oppression to a pile of rubble and pulverized stone.

"Book the jet," I said, a confident smile playing on my lips. "It's time to take the rest of the world."
