Chapter 12 - THE SHARK IN THE WATER

The federal courthouse in downtown Manhattan was a cathedral of cold marble and echoing footsteps. It was three days after the raid on the Caldwell estate, and the media had descended upon Foley Square like a swarm of locusts. Camera flashes popped incessantly, blinding me as Marcus guided me through the surging sea of reporters, microphones shoved aggressively toward my face.
"Mrs. Caldwell! Is it true your husband signed away his controlling shares?"
"Evelyn! Do you have a statement regarding the Project Aegis patent theft?"
"Are you seeking a billion-dollar settlement?"
I kept my chin up, my gaze fixed straight ahead, wearing a tailored charcoal pantsuit that screamed quiet authority. I wasn't the timid, shrinking violet Ethan had paraded around like an embarrassing accessory. I was the majority shareholder, the chief architect of the most lucrative tech merger of the decade, and the woman who was about to dismantle the Caldwell dynasty piece by piece.
Inside Courtroom 302, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Ethan sat at the defense table, flanked by a public defender who looked like he had graduated law school ten minutes ago. Ethan’s hair was unwashed, his bespoke suit wrinkled from sleeping in a holding cell, and his eyes were bloodshot and frantic. When he saw me walk through the oak swinging doors, a flicker of desperate hope crossed his face—hope that quickly morphed into sheer terror when he realized I wasn't looking at him with sadness or anger, but with absolute, chilling indifference.
"All rise for the Honorable Judge Thomas," the bailiff boomed.
Judge Thomas adjusted his half-moon spectacles, scanning the briefs before him with a weary expression. "We are here for bail review in the matter of *United States v. Ethan Caldwell*. Mr. Caldwell is facing up to twenty years for corporate sabotage, wire fraud, and conspiracy. The prosecution?"
Assistant U.S. Attorney Miller stood up, buttoning his suit jacket. "Your Honor, the defendant represents a severe flight risk, possessing dual citizenship and access to offshore accounts currently being frozen by federal authorities. Furthermore, new evidence links him to a conspiracy to incapacitate his wife to seize her intellectual property. We request he be held without bail."
Ethan slammed his hands down on the defense table, half-rising from his chair. "That's a lie! My wife is framing me! She’s a manipulative gold-digger who—"
"Mr. Caldwell!" Judge Thomas’s voice cracked like a whip through the silent courtroom. "One more outburst and I will hold you in contempt. Sit down."

Ethan collapsed back into his chair, his chest heaving, his mouth working silently as he glared at me across the aisle. I didn't flinch. I slowly crossed one leg over the other and offered him a faint, polite smile.
