Chapter 14 - THE RECKONING AT CALDWELL ENTERPRISES

The boardroom of Caldwell Enterprises had once been a place where I was relegated to the corner, told to fetch coffee, and forced to listen to middle-aged executives mock my design proposals. Today, the mahogany table was empty except for me, Marcus, and the company's chief financial officer, a terrified man named Henderson who looked like he was about to vomit on his expensive tie.
"Mrs... Mrs. Caldwell," Henderson stammered, sliding a leather-bound ledger toward me. "The board has... well, the remaining board members have resigned en masse following the SEC freeze. You now hold ninety-four percent of the voting shares."
I didn't touch the ledger. I looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the Manhattan skyline gleam under a bruised, gray autumn sky. "Dissolve the board, Henderson."
Henderson blinked, his jaw dropping. "Dissolve... ma'am, you can't just dissolve the board of a Fortune 500 company without a shareholder vote—"
"I *am* the shareholder vote," I interrupted, my voice dropping an octave, carrying an absolute authority that made him flinch. "File the paperwork by end of day. Rename the corporation Aegis Global. And I want every single executive office on this floor cleared out by midnight. I want no trace of the Caldwell family legacy left in this building."
"Yes, ma'am! Right away, ma'am!" Henderson practically scrambled backward out of the boardroom, tripping over his own briefcase in his haste to escape.
Marcus stepped up beside me, handing me a fresh cup of black coffee. "You just wiped a century-old dynasty off the corporate registry in thirty seconds. How does it feel?"
I took a slow sip of the coffee, looking at my reflection in the massive glass window. The woman staring back wasn't the bruised, humiliated girl who had stood at that gala weeks ago, listening to her husband's cruel laughter. That girl was dead. In her place stood a titan.
"It feels like breathing fresh air after being held underwater for five years," I said softly. "How is our security team handling Vanessa's deposition?"
"Locked down," Marcus replied, a faint smile touching the corner of his mouth. "She gave us everything. Bank transfers, emails, text messages planning the fake psychiatric hold. Ethan's defense is in absolute ruins. His own lawyers are filing motions to withdraw because he can't pay them and they know he's going away for a very, very long time."
May you like
"Good," I turned away from the window, my eyes flashing with cold determination. "Let's go visit my loving husband. It's time for a family reunion."
