Chapter 26 - The Wolf in Tailored Wool

"Shut up, Julian," I said, my voice cutting through his hysterical screeching like a blade.

The line went silent for a beat. All I could hear was Julian’s ragged, wheezing breath, followed by the distant sound of steel clanging against concrete and the low rumble of an industrial heater.

"Clara... please," Julian whimpered, his voice dissolving into pathetic tears. "You don't understand who these people are. Viktor Kroll isn't a businessman. He's a monster. He tore the fingernails off my left hand, Clara! Look in the drive—there’s enough money for all of us! Take Maya, take the ten million cut, and just leave the keys in the locker!"

"You put my daughter’s life on the line the day she was born," I whispered, the rage inside me burning so hot it felt icy cold. "You used my name. You used my credit. You turned our home into a shooting gallery last night. And now you expect me to save you?"

"You don't have a choice!" Julian shrieked. "Because if I die, Kroll releases the secondary charter to FinCEN! Lindqvist isn't here to protect you, Clara! She’s Kroll’s paid liaison inside the Treasury! Why do you think she showed up at your cabin right before the strike team hit? She was verifying that the ledger was on-site!"

The puzzle pieces snapped together with horrifying clarity.

Lindqvist hadn't come to warn us. She had come to flush us out. She had verified that I was at the cabin, signaled the hit squad, and left her magnetic tracker in the files to guide them straight to our car.

"Where is Viktor Kroll?" I asked quietly.

A new voice came over the phone. Heavy. Cultured. Deep as a tomb, with a thick Slavic cadence that sent a cold shudder down my spine.

"Mrs. Sterling," the voice said calmly. The sound of Julian groaning in agony echoed in the background before being cut off by the dull thud of a boot hitting flesh. "A pleasure to finally speak with the brilliant mind behind Caelum Logistics."

"Viktor Kroll," I said, gripping the edge of the metal table until my knuckles turned white.

"Your husband is a pathetic, sniveling thief," Kroll said smoothly, as if discussing the weather over afternoon tea. "He stole from men who do not permit theft. But you... you are a woman of remarkable efficiency. You managed his domestic books for seven years without a single regulatory flag. I respect competence."

"You sent gunmen to murder my daughter," I replied, my voice shaking with fury.

"A regrettable misunderstanding by my regional subcontractors," Kroll dismissed casually. "They were instructed to retrieve the hardware, nothing more. But now we understand each other. You have the cryptographic keys to sixty million dollars of my capital. I have your husband. And more importantly, Mrs. Sterling... I know that Mr. Liam Vance has been lying to you since the day you met."

I froze. "What are you talking about?"

"Ask Mr. Vance why his family’s private equity firm underwrote Julian’s debt four years ago," Kroll purred, his words dripping with venomous amusement. "Julian didn't find me on his own, my dear. Liam Vance introduced us. Julian was Vance’s laundering tool long before he was mine. Why do you think Vance was so eager to become your knight in shining armor the moment Julian ran?"

My breath caught in my throat. I looked toward the closed door of the private bank room, imagining Liam standing outside by the SUV, his calm, protective eyes masking secrets I had never even dreamed of.

"Locker 88. Grand Central. 1:00 PM," Kroll commanded. "Bring the hardware yourself. If Liam Vance is within five hundred yards of that terminal, I will have Julian’s body dumped on your mother’s front lawn, and my men will find your daughter before the sun sets."

The line went dead.

I stood alone in the cold, windowless room, staring at the black encrypted hardware wallet in my hand.

I took a deep breath, slipped the drive into my coat pocket, and tapped the earpiece in my ear once.

"Liam," I said, keeping my voice completely level. "I have the box. I’m coming out."
