Chapter 39 - The Restoration

The transition didn't happen overnight, but when the corporate machinery of Vance International began to unravel, it did so with breathtaking speed. With Arthur Vance behind bars awaiting federal trial on dozens of counts of racketeering, securities fraud, and corporate extortion, the board of directors dissolved within forty-eight hours.
The Sterling Family Trust was legally reinstated by a federal judge, nullifying every fraudulent acquisition and returning the Alaska oil reserves—along with the dormant capital accounts—directly to my name.
Three weeks later, the morning sun poured through the wide glass windows of my newly renovated bakery on the corner of Maple Street. The smell of freshly baked sourdough, caramelized sugar, and rich vanilla filled the air, completely replacing the lingering scent of fear and smoke that had haunted me for so long.
The bell above the front door chimed softly.
I looked up from behind the pastry counter, wiping my hands on a clean linen apron.
Liam walked in, wearing a simple wool coat without a tie, looking more like a man who belonged in a neighborhood bakery than the former heir to a global corporate empire. He carried a small, wrapped package tied with a simple red ribbon.
"Morning, Baker Sterling," Liam said with a soft, genuine smile that reached all the way to his eyes.
"Morning, Mr. Vance," I replied, leaning against the counter with a playful smirk. "Or should I be calling you something else now? I hear the board is offering you the CEO seat to clean up the mess."
Liam shook his head, tossing his coat over a nearby chair and walking straight behind the counter, right up to where I stood. "I told them to find someone else. I’m entirely retired from corporate warfare."
"Is that right?" I raised an eyebrow. "And what does a retired corporate executive plan to do with his time?"
"Well," Liam said, his gaze locking onto mine with a warmth that made my breath catch, "I heard a rumor that the head baker here was looking for someone who actually knew how to knead dough without burning the kitchen down."
"Oh?" I crossed my arms, fighting back a smile. "And does this applicant have any references?"
"Just one," Liam whispered, leaning in close until his lips brushed my ear, his hand sliding gently around my waist. "He promised to stay out of the boardrooms forever, as long as he gets to taste the lemon-garlic salmon every single night."
I turned in his arms, wrapping my hands around his neck, looking up into his gray eyes, which were finally free of the shadows of his father's empire.
"Accepted," I whispered.

Outside, the city streets bustled with the bright, unfiltered light of a new morning, peaceful and full of promise. The storm was finally over, and the horizon ahead stretched out wide, warm, and entirely our own.
