Chapter 27 - The Hostage Game

The snow in Beacon had turned to slush by the time I walked back to the Range Rover.

Liam was standing beside the rear passenger door, his coat unbuttoned, his sharp, watchful eyes scanning the rooftops and alleyways with military precision. When he saw me approach, the tension in his shoulders visibly dropped, but the hardened look in his gray eyes remained.

"Did you get it?" he asked, opening the door for me.

I climbed into the front seat without answering immediately. Maya was sitting in the back, happily eating a warm blueberry muffin one of Liam’s security men had brought her, coloring on a notepad with a set of crayons.

"Look, Mommy," she beamed, holding up a drawing of a house with a green roof. "Liam said we’re going to get a house with horses in the spring."

My heart broke into a thousand jagged pieces. I looked at the little girl who had lived through a nightmare without even knowing the full depth of the monsters surrounding her.

"It’s beautiful, sweetheart," I whispered, kissing her cheek.

I looked at Liam through the rearview mirror. "Drive. We need to talk."

Liam nodded to his lead security vehicle, a nondescript black Suburban that pulled out ahead of us, clearing our path onto the highway toward Westchester. Once we hit the open road, I reached into my coat and placed the hardware drive and Julian’s letter onto the leather armrest between us.

Liam glanced down at the letter. His jaw tightened, but he didn't flinch.

"Julian talked to you," Liam said. It wasn't a question; it was a deduction.

"Viktor Kroll talked to me," I corrected, my voice cold, measured, and stripped of all the warmth I had felt for him over the past three months. "He told me about Vance Capital’s logistics charters in 2018. He told me you underwrote Julian’s debt four years ago. He told me you handed Julian to Kroll on a silver platter."

The silence inside the moving vehicle was suffocating. The only sound was the rhythmic thud of the wipers clearing slush from the windshield.

Liam didn't look away from the road. "Julian was drowning, Clara. Four years ago, he came to Vance Capital begging for a thirty-million-dollar mezzanine loan to cover short positions his firm took on maritime freight. We ran a forensic audit on his books. That was the first time I saw your signature on Caelum Logistics."

"And you didn't warn me?" I asked, a bitter laugh escaping my lips. "You watched my husband tie an international syndicate around my neck, and you said nothing?"

"I didn't know you then, Clara!" Liam said, his voice rising with raw, uncharacteristic passion. "To me, you were just another corporate socialite whose name was on the legal papers of a fraudulent shell company! But when our audit revealed that Kroll was already using Julian to move illicit cash through our secondary shipping lines, I killed the loan. I cut Julian off."

"And what did Julian do?"

"Julian went directly to Kroll behind my back," Liam said, turning his head slightly to lock eyes with me. "He offered Kroll direct access to my domestic freight corridors using your signature as the authorization stamp. Julian didn't just frame you, Clara—he framed Vance Capital. He made it look like my firm was laundering money for Kroll's syndicate."

"So your entire crusade to help me... the lawyers, the divorce, the cabin upstate..." Tears of betrayal pricked my eyes. "It was just corporate risk management? You were just cleaning your own backyard?"

Liam pulled the SUV abruptly onto the shoulder of an abandoned scenic overlook above the Hudson River. He shifted into park, turned in his seat, and leaned across the console until his face was inches from mine.

"At first? Yes," Liam said, his voice harsh with unflinching honesty. "Three months ago, you were a liability I needed to contain. But then I met you, Clara. I watched you fight for your daughter with nothing but bare hands and broken pride. I watched you cook dinner with lead in your feet and fire in your eyes. I fell in love with a woman who had every reason to break and refused to bend."

He reached out, his hand hovering over mine, not touching unless I allowed it.

"I didn't bring you upstate to hide you from Kroll," Liam whispered. "I brought you there because I thought I could keep you safe from the world Julian dragged you into. If you want to take that drive to Grand Central and walk away from me forever, I will give you ten million dollars in bearer bonds right now, fly you and Maya to New Zealand, and fight Kroll by myself."

I looked at his open hand. Then I looked back at Julian’s desperate, sniveling handwriting on the letter.

Julian had spent eight years using me as a shield, lying to my face every time he kissed my forehead. Liam Vance had concealed the origin of his involvement, but when the bullets started flying, he had thrown himself in front of my child and stood his ground.

"Kroll has Julian in Queens," I said, ignoring the bearer bonds completely. "Lindqvist is Kroll's inside asset. They expect me at Locker 88 at 1:00 PM. But Kroll doesn't want the drive, Liam. He wants to execute the ledger transfer on-site, verify the sixty million, and kill every witness who can link Vance Capital and Caelum Logistics to his network."

A dark, dangerous smile slowly spread across Liam’s lips. The predator inside the CEO woke up.

"Then let’s give Viktor Kroll the meeting he’s asking for," Liam said. "Just not in Grand Central."
