Chapter 28 - The Counter-Strike

By 11:30 AM, our caravan had established a mobile command hub inside an unmarked corporate hangar at Westchester County Airport.

Maya was safe inside a soundproof, bulletproof executive suite on the upper level, under the personal protection of Liam’s former British Special Boat Service private security detail. She had hot cocoa, a stack of sketchpads, and two guards standing outside her door with orders to shoot anyone who approached without the biometric clearance token around my neck.

Down on the hangar floor, Liam’s elite cyber-forensics team had the hardware wallet connected to an isolated, air-gapped terminal.

"The drive contains sixty-two million four hundred thousand dollars in tethered digital assets," the lead analyst reported, his fingers dancing across mechanical keys. "Julian routed it through four separate sub-networks. But here’s the kicker: Julian didn't have the final authorization cipher. The system requires dual biometric authentication."

"Let me guess," I said, standing beside the glowing monitors. "My right thumbprint and Julian’s retinal scan."

"Exactly," the analyst said. "Julian can't move a single cent without you sitting right in front of him. And Kroll can't touch the funds until both of you authenticate the master transfer to his offshore account in Cyprus."

"So as long as I don't touch that scanner," I said, "Julian stays alive. And Kroll can't pull the trigger on either of us."

"Kroll knows that," Liam said, walking up beside me with a digital floor plan projected onto a glass tablet. "That’s why Grand Central was always a fake drop. Locker 88 was just a checkpoint to verify you were traveling alone. The moment you opened that locker, Lindqvist’s team would have grabbed you, thrown you into an unmarked van, and brought you to the real slaughterhouse."

"The auto body shop in Queens," I murmured, remembering the sounds over Julian’s phone call.

"Crown Auto Collision on 14th Street in Long Island City," Liam confirmed, tapping the tablet. "Our satellite recon picked up Lindqvist’s Pennsylvania rental sedan parked behind the warehouse thirty minutes ago. Kroll is there. Julian is there. And forty heavily armed syndicate contractors are holding the perimeter."

"How do we take them down without getting Julian killed before he signs the exoneration papers?" I asked.

Liam looked at me, a cold, calculating gleam in his eyes. "We don't take them down with bullets, Clara. We take them down with capital."

He turned to his analyst. "Clone the hardware ledger. Create a secondary mirror loop that mimics the master transfer. When Clara enters that facility, she’s going to initiate the transfer to Kroll’s Cyprus accounts. But instead of routing the sixty million to his private wallet, the loop will route the funds directly into an escrow account owned by the International Criminal Court’s Asset Forfeiture Division."

I caught my breath. "The second Kroll’s system verifies receipt of the funds..."

"Every single one of his global shipping charters, bank accounts, and container vessels in forty-two ports will be frozen simultaneously by Interpol," Liam finished. "He won't be a kingpin anymore. He’ll be a penniless fugitive on every intelligence agency's red notice within twelve seconds."

"And Lindqvist?" I asked.

Liam smiled darkly. "FinCEN’s internal affairs director is already sitting in a black van two blocks from the Queens warehouse. We fed them Lindqvist’s real-time encrypted communications from the upstate attack. She’s walking into her own execution of badge and pension."

I looked down at the hardware drive in my hand.

For seven years, I had been the silent partner, the quiet woman in the kitchen who absorbed the insults, the condescension, and the calculated theft of my life. Julian thought I was weak. Kroll thought I was a frightened soccer mom.

They were about to find out what happens when the architect of their paper empire decides to tear it down with her own bare hands.

"Get the car ready," I told Liam. "I have a meeting in Queens."
