Chapter 35 - The Subterranean Exit

The concrete stairwell emptied into a vast, underground logistics tunnel that stretched as far as the eye could see, illuminated only by dim, flickering amber emergency lights. Water dripped from the overhead pipes, echoing in the damp silence.

I leaned against a concrete pillar, gasping for breath, clutching the burnt-out shell of the flare in my hand. My heart hammered violently against my ribs. The adrenaline that had fueled my escape was beginning to fade, leaving behind a cold, shaking exhaustion.

Footsteps echoed from the stairwell door above—heavy, rapid, purposeful.

Panic surged through me again. I pushed off the pillar and sprinted down the center of the tunnel, looking for a side exit, a maintenance hatch, anything that could lead me out of this subterranean labyrinth.

"Clara!"

The voice bounced off the concrete walls, deep and breathless.

I froze, turning around with the heavy metal flare raised like a club. Out of the shadows of the stairwell exit, a tall figure emerged, limping slightly, his jacket torn and his tie missing.

"Liam," I breathed, lowering the metal tube as my knees nearly gave out under me.

Liam reached me in three long strides, grabbing my shoulders to steady me. His face was streaked with soot and sweat, a dark bruise forming along his jawline, but his gray eyes burned with intense, fierce relief.

"Are you hurt?" he asked quickly, his hands scanning my arms and face as if checking for invisible injuries.

"No," I whispered, shaking my head. "I'm okay. But your father... the guards..."

"My father is currently explaining to his security team why the entire east wing smells like a roadside flare," Liam said with a grim, humorless smile, catching his breath. "I locked the blast doors behind us from the master console. It'll take them at least twenty minutes to override the hydraulics. We have time."

"Twenty minutes before we're hunted down by a corporate empire," I said, my voice dropping into a bitter, exhausted cadence. "Liam, we can't run forever. Your father owns the banks, the courts, the security firms. Where do we even go?"

"We don't run," Liam said softly, stepping closer, his hand gently sliding down my arm to take my cold fingers. "We counter-attack."

I looked up at him, bewildered. "With what? We have nothing. My bakery is compromised, your accounts are tied to your father's trust, and we're standing in a sewer beneath a billionaire's mansion."

"Not nothing," Liam corrected, reaching into his inner pocket and pulling out a small, heavy black flash drive. He held it up under the dim amber light. "While my father was gloating in the dining room, my corporate override didn't just open the exit door. It downloaded the master financial ledger of Vance International's offshore accounts—including every bribe, every rigged auction, and every illegal asset seizure over the past twenty years, signed directly by Arthur Vance's digital private key."

I stared at the small piece of plastic, the weight of what it represented sinking in slowly. "That's... that's federal prison for him and every board member."

"That’s the end of Vance International," Liam corrected quietly. "And the freedom of every person my family ever crushed—including your father."
