Chapter 10 - The Unmasking

"Ethan!" Denise screamed hysterically as Kyle was pushed face-first against the vinyl siding, the cold steel handcuffs clicking around his wrists. "Do something! You're a man, aren't you? Tell this cop who we are!"

Ethan was paralyzed. He looked at Detective Miller. "James... what's this about? What did Kyle take?"

Miller turned around, reaching into his pocket. He pulled out an evidence bag containing a small gold band. He held it up so the afternoon sun caught the gleaming surface.

"He pawned your father's wedding ring on Broad Street on Saturday afternoon, Ethan," Miller said, his voice dripping with disgust. "For two hundred and forty bucks. Probably to buy whatever’s in his pockets right now."

Natalie covered her mouth with both hands, letting out a horrified gasp. She turned to Kyle, her eyes wide with revulsion. "You stole Arthur's wedding ring? You went into Linda’s bedroom and stole Arthur’s ring?"

"It was just sitting there!" Kyle yelled, squirming against the officer's grip. "She’s got millions! She doesn't need it! Mom told me to grab something valuable to make up for the trouble!"

The entire street seemed to fall silent.

Ethan looked as if he had been struck by a semi-truck. He turned his head slowly toward Denise.

Denise's eyes darted frantically between Ethan, Natalie, and the police officers. "He's lying! Kyle's scared, he doesn't know what he's saying! I never said that!"

"You're a liar, Mom!" Kyle shouted from the cruiser's back seat. "You told me in the car on the way over to look for her jewelry while everyone was watching the game! You said she owed us!"

Natalie dropped to the lawn, weeping from the sheer humiliation and horror of what her family had done.

Ethan stood completely still. All the color had drained from his face. For three years, he had defended these people. He had fought his mother. He had poured his own savings into their bills. He had believed Denise was just an eccentric, loud, but ultimately loving mother-in-law who needed a break.
