Chapter 5 - Unraveling Threads

Natalie stood up from the wine-stained floor, her tear-stained eyes locking onto Ethan with sudden fury. "Is that true? Is that where the eight hundred dollars from our savings went last month? You told me our car insurance spiked!"

"Natalie, calm down, she was going to have her power shut off!" Ethan pleaded, holding up his hands. "She's your mother! What was I supposed to do?"

"You were supposed to let her face the consequences of her own choices!" Natalie cried out, her voice cracking. "Do you have any idea what it was like growing up with her? She takes and takes until there is nothing left, and then she blames you for being empty! I begged you never to let her have leverage over us, and you handed her the keys to Linda's property!"

I watched them, my heart breaking for Natalie. For three years, I had assumed Natalie was the conduit through which Denise’s entitlement flowed. But looking at her raw, exhausted face, I realized the bitter truth: Natalie hadn’t invited the vampire in. Ethan had, out of a naive, desperate desire to be the hero who kept everyone happy.

"The eviction stands," I said firmly, breaking through their argument. "I had my lawyer file the paperwork with the Franklin County municipal court on Thursday. It will be officially served on Monday morning."

"Mom, please don't do this to my marriage," Ethan whispered.

"I am not doing anything to your marriage, Ethan. Your inability to set boundaries is doing that," I said. "Now, I want both of you to leave. I have a ruined living room to clean, and I want to be alone in my own house."

Natalie nodded slowly, wiping her eyes with the back of her sleeve. Without another word, she picked up her purse and walked out the door into the cool evening air. Ethan hesitated, looking at me with a mixture of anger, guilt, and disbelief.

"You're changing, Mom," he said quietly. "Dad wouldn't have been this cold."

A slap to the face wouldn't have stung more. But I didn't flinch. "Your father would have thrown Kyle through the front window twenty minutes ago, Ethan. Do not invoke his name to justify your cowardice."

Ethan turned pale, spun on his heel, and left, closing the door behind him.
