Chapter 7 - The Security Footage

I didn't reply to the post. I didn't engage in the comments.

Instead, I sat at my desktop computer with a pot of black coffee and pulled up my cloud archives. I downloaded four specific video files from the previous twenty-four hours:

1. Denise, Monica, and Kyle unlocking my front door using a hidden spare key they had evidently found in my garden shed weeks ago, carrying coolers of cheap beer into my house while I was at the dentist.

2. Kyle rummaging through my liquor cabinet, pulling out Arthur’s retired bottle of Pappy Van Winkle, and loudly boasting to a friend, “Old Linda doesn’t know what she has. This is worth two grand easy.”

3. Denise rummaging through my dining room sideboard, stuffing my sterling silver serving spoons into her oversized tote bag before the party guests arrived.

4. The living room camera showing Kyle shoving Ethan, swinging the bourbon bottle, and laughing as I called the police—with no knife anywhere in sight.

I called my attorney, Robert Vance, at his home. Robert had been Arthur’s high school classmate and was one of the sharpest estate and property lawyers in central Ohio.

"Robert," I said calmly. "Denise has posted false accusations of criminal assault against me on a public forum with tens of thousands of members. And I have hard evidence of felony grand theft and burglary."

Robert’s voice turned brisk and professional. "Send me the files, Linda. Don't post a single word online. Let me handle this with the county prosecutor and a formal cease-and-desist with defamation penalties."

"There's more," I added, looking at the silver spoons in the video playback. "Look closely at what Kyle was doing in my hallway."

Kyle had gone into my upstairs master bedroom while the football game was playing. He had emerged five minutes later slipping something small into his leather jacket pocket.

My heart sank into my stomach. I bolted up the stairs to my jewelry box.
