Chapter 12 - The Collapse of Denise's Web

When we stepped out into the marble hallways of the courthouse, Denise cornered us near the elevators.

"You think you won, Linda?" Denise hissed, her voice shaking with poisonous venom. "You've ruined my family! Kyle is in jail! Natalie won't speak to me! Ethan won't answer my calls! What kind of monster are you?"

Robert Vance immediately stepped between us, towering over her. "Ms. Vance, take one more step toward my client and I will have the bailiff arrest you for violation of the preliminary civil protection order filed yesterday."

Denise scoffed, but she stepped back. "Ethan will come back to us. Blood is thicker than water!"

"Ethan isn't your blood, Denise," I said calmly, looking at her without an ounce of the fear or guilt she had exploited for years. "And Natalie has finally seen you for what you really are: a predator who eats her own children."

Monica grabbed Denise's arm, pulling her away. "Come on, Denise. Let's go. She's got the judges bought off anyway."

As they hurried down the corridor toward the exit, my phone chimed in my purse.

It was a text from Ethan:

*“Mom, can I come over tonight? Just me. Please.”*

I stared at the screen for a long time. The wound Ethan had inflicted when he accused me of being colder than his father was still deep and raw. But he was my son.

I typed back one word: *“Yes.”*
