Chapter 10 - Secrets in the Ledger

Over the next week, the Vance family’s world began to unravel from the inside out.

Evelyn didn't waste a single hour. She hired an independent investigator to pull the public corporate filings of Vance Commercial Properties. What they discovered went far beyond bad investments.

"Sarah," Evelyn called me on Thursday night. "Did you ever receive the college trust fund your grandmother left for you?"

I frowned, holding the phone to my ear. "No. My dad told me Grandmother spent all her savings on her hospice care before she passed away. He said there was nothing left."

A heavy sigh came across the line. "Your grandmother died with two hundred and eighty thousand dollars in a guaranteed trust earmarked specifically for you and your future children. Richard was named the sole trustee until you turned twenty-five."

My stomach dropped through the floor. "What happened to it?"

"Two months before your twenty-fifth birthday, Richard dissolved the trust, forged your signature on an authorization of transfer, and moved the funds directly into his company’s payroll account to cover an overdue commercial mortgage on his downtown building."

I sat in the dark kitchen, the betrayal feeling like a physical blow to my chest.

He hadn't just neglected me. He hadn't just kicked my bleeding daughter onto the street. He had stolen the money his own mother left to protect me, while calling me an ungrateful burden.

"Evelyn," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "Give it to the prosecutor."
