Chapter 2 - The Doorbell Tolls

The silence in the entryway was thick enough to choke on.

Diane stood frozen, her hand clinging to the brass door knob until her knuckles turned ivory. Richard hurried out from the kitchen, wiping his mouth with a napkin, but froze three paces behind his wife. The presence of two county cruisers parked along the curb, their emergency lights quietly flashing blue against the morning dew, signaled that this was no informal family quarrel.

"Daniel?" Diane stuttered, her shrill confidence entirely gone. "What... what are you doing here? You're deployed. You can't just barge in—"

"Step aside, ma'am," Deputy Miller said, stepping past Daniel onto the entryway threshold.

"You don't have permission to enter my home!" Richard barked, attempting to puff out his chest. "I am a respected business owner in this township. Get off my lawn!"

Deputy Miller unfolded the white legal papers. "Richard Vance, Diane Vance, and Vanessa Vance. We have a signed emergency order of protection and an active warrant for criminal assault and child endangerment."

From the top of the stairs, Vanessa let out a strangled gasp. "Assault? That's ridiculous! It was an accident! She tripped!"

Daniel slowly turned his gaze up the staircase. He didn't yell. He didn't raise a fist. But the cold, lethal stillness in his posture made Vanessa involuntarily take two steps backward, her back slamming against the banister.

"Three parents from Emma’s class gave recorded statements, Vanessa," Daniel said, his voice smooth as polished stone. "Two of them recorded video on their phones for Emma’s birthday memory reel. The sheriff has the footage. The district attorney watched you slap an eight-year-old across the face."

Vanessa turned an awful shade of gray. "Mom, tell him! Dad!"

Richard tried to step in front of the deputy. "This is a private family dispute! My daughter made a mistake, maybe, but Sarah provoked her! Sarah brought that child into our lives without our blessing—"

"Shut your mouth, Richard," Daniel cut in, taking a single half-step forward. The sheer physical presence of a combat veteran who had just spent fourteen hours on transport flights made Richard instantly swallow his words. "You don't get to speak her name. And you don't get to call yourself a grandfather."

Deputy Miller motioned to his partner. "Vanessa Vance, come down the stairs with your hands where we can see them."

"No!" Vanessa shrieked. "I’m not going anywhere! Dad, call our lawyer! Call Judge Henderson!"

"Judge Henderson recused himself thirty minutes ago when he saw the emergency room photos," Deputy Miller replied flatly. "Down the stairs. Now. Or we will escort you down."

Tears of humiliation began to run down Vanessa's face. Shivering, she descended the stairs in her silk pajamas. The click of the steel cuffs echoed sharply through the grand foyer.

As they walked her out past Daniel, she looked at him, desperately seeking sympathy. "Daniel, please... we were friends once. Think about the family."

"My family is at home with ice on her broken face," Daniel replied without looking at her. "You aren't family. You're an assailant."
