Chapter 5 - The "Bastard" Lie

The truth behind Vanessa’s venom ran deep, rooted in ten years of festering jealousy.

When I was twenty-one, I became pregnant while in college. The biological father vanished the second the pregnancy test turned positive, fleeing out of state. My parents were mortified. Richard called me a disgrace to the family name; Diane suggested I quietly give the baby up for adoption so they wouldn't have to endure "the whispers at church."

I refused. I worked two jobs, finished my degree at night, and raised Emma in a tiny studio apartment.

Three years later, Daniel entered our lives.

He was home on leave after his first tour—tall, confident, respectful, and endlessly kind. When he met Emma, he didn't run; he sat on the carpet and played tea party for three hours. When we married, Daniel formally adopted Emma, bestowing his name and his unconditional devotion upon her.

Vanessa, on the other hand, had spent her thirties chasing wealthy bachelors, burning through three broken engagements, and drowning her insecurities in designer clothes funded by my father’s business. She hated that I—the "fallen daughter"—had found an honorable, loving man, while she remained miserable and alone in her luxury condo.

For years, Vanessa had weaponized Emma’s origins at every holiday dinner, making slick, passive-aggressive remarks about "broken homes" and "charity cases."

I had always endured it to keep the peace. I had bitten my tongue to protect Emma from family drama.

*Never again,* I thought, watching Daniel sit at the kitchen table, methodically reviewing copies of the police report with a legal highlighter. *Keeping the peace was just feeding the monsters.*
